Another pledge comes knockin'
« on: September 29, 2011, 09:14:03 AM »
What's up folks? I'm sure glad you all decided to give me the nodd. I've recently been in the market for a solid hull as a platform for a tower rig. I have looked at the 22 and 23 Mako's extensively but had questions on how skinny they would run, as running depth is a concern for me. A friend of mine mentioned the old Aquasport 222 hulls, so I started doing some digging.

Lucikly I found a few in my area. Some have been nice, some not so nice, a few in between and a couple that were total pieces of junk. I'm only 28 and with an impending wedding in 9 days, I have a full plate and a depleted wallet. Budget will surlely be a consideration on this build however I have a good friend that does this work for a living. He has been kind enough to offer his services in exchange for the first mate position come cobia and tarpon season. Soooo, I feel like I have a pretty decent start, at least on what this process entails (mostly thanks to threads on this site). I have read most of the rebuilds on here over the last two weeks and think I have somewhat of a start on where the problem areas lie.

The hull that is the front runner for me at this point is a '79 22-2, the 12 degree, not the flatback. This hull sank in the slip. The floor is soft all the way forward to the front casting deck, however the front deck seems solid except for the lids. The tank has got to be junk and the console has a million holes in it. The transom is decent.

Obviously I plan to fix the floor, add a new tank, box in the transom and fix any other problem areas we come across. In planning for all this I am trying to get ideas on where unseen problems may arise during the process.

To everyone's knowledge, do most folks have issues with stringers being wet/rotten or delaming from the hull? That's a major X factor I guess. Hopefully once the console, tank and floor comes out, we'll find the stringers to be in good shape, but who knows.

In the interim, I want to say again thanks for opening the doors for me. I can already tell what an invaluable resource this place is and for that I appreciate in advance all the help that I know will come from here.

Once I have a chance to download some pics of my camera I'll show you guys what all I've been looking at....hopefully later today.

You guys are funny. I have an awesome girl and the only poon I chase now has scales. I have tarpon on the brain worse than most, hence my name. As to the marriage, my girl is as cool as they come. In fact, yesterday when I asked, Babe, what do you think about me buying this hull? she responded by saying why don't you buy it and put a big bow on it for my wedding present.....

I'm not sure what's going on, but something is

If you find a poon with scales that you weren't expecting to be there, it sure makes one without them seem more appealing.

Welcome!  Your girl seems like a real catch

Sorry Poon, seems we were so excited to welcome you, nobody answered any of your questions

There's plenty of others here that can speak to this with more experience than me when it comes to AS's of your circa.  I've ripped the floor out of an old 70's CC and rebuilt the stringers, but it wasn't an Aquasport (I got lucky - my AS is solid).  To answer your questions, yes to all of them.  There's a small strip of wood in your stringers that could rot, but it doesn't really lend much to the structure of your boat.  Your stringers are composed of mostly foam and glass, and since your deck is wet and soft (and the boat sank at the slip), there's a 99.9% chance that the foam in your stringers is waterlogged and your stringers need to be replaced.  There's wood in the floor and the transom, and as you know since yours is wet, its probably all rotten in your boat (your transom probably needs work too...).  Sorry to say, but don't get your hopes up  :(

Jess,

Sorry, I should have been more explicit. Miss Delmarva still is open, tank and floor going in next. So Poon is riding out there this afternoon, to see what he'll be faced with. Chris is going to walk him through what has been done to this point, and what will be needed to complete the rebuild.

Welcome Poonhound to the club and congrats on the wedding and becoming a future owner of one of the sexiest boats ever made..

Had no clue you had a tarpon fishery as far north as NC. Is it just in the late summer? Tarpon are my favorite fish to catch and there is nothing like putting a client on there first tarpon. I live roughly 20 miles by water from Boca Grande pass the gran daddy of all tarpon fishing spots.

Good choice on mid 70's 22-2 they make a sweet tower boat and are pretty easy to find. I grew up running mako's,  a 17, a 22 and a 23 gulfcoast edition I think they called it, the 23 had a really shallow V. They are great boats but built weird with almost a floating floor that does not seem to be attatched to the stringers. I think the aquasport is a better choice.
Plan on the stringers being soaked if not delaminated too. If you rip it apart and they are not then thats better for you.

Late 70's models are only 2 stingers wide so even if they are wet and loose its not a massive job to replace, reattach or re foam them. If you are going to tear it apart the transom is not that hard to rebuild either. Any 30 year old transom is suspect at best.

Once you get in the demo mode it's hard to not rip everything out and go from scratch. That way you have no question to what you have at the end.
