What do you do with your fish carcass?
« on: September 26, 2011, 10:19:11 PM »
Curious...I fish on the weekends and I don't have trash service til tuesdays.  If I leave my grouper carcass' in the trash, I typically have a rather unpleasant mess of an ungodly stench combined with hundreds of flies, and the beginnings of a maggot farm.  Needless to say, my neighbors are not a big fan of my fishing.  Is it legal to dump the carcass' in the water somewhere?  What do you do to dispose of your catch remnants?

Dig a small trench next to your bushes/shrubs, place carcasses in trench, cover with backfill.  Plant life LOVES fish fertilizer...

Well, I am happy to say that I catch more fish than ny plants could handle but will try that out on the next trip.  I don't have much in the way of a flower bed, but have a few bushes that could benefit from some fish guts. :D

Just dig a deep hole. Mark it, and the next spring, you have fertile earth. Go green :thumright:

Exactly,i've put 16 groupers in a hole many times, just gotta dig deep and give those bugs some grub  :D

And put a cinder block on the hole, keeps the coons from digging it up.

I normally don't keep the fish I catch... I like to think that someday I'll catch them again this way :|

When I go fishing with my Father-in-law-to-be, he doesn't share my same thoughts, so he puts the carcasses in his crab trap and minnow trap.  He lives on the water with his own personal dock (some guys have all the luck), so fish carcasses end up turning into more bait, so more fish, so more crabs.   8)

I clean my fish at the marina fillet table after the trip and dump the remains right there back in the water. One popular boat ramp here has a big grinder for the fish remains, it stops the pelicans from choking on them. If I happen to clean a fish at home I drive the remains down the street and throw them in the water. The fish remains don't last long in the water as the crabs, pinfish and catfish eat them up

Fish is great for the garden but dig a deep hole, man.  We had a dachsund once.  Let her out one night, and she didn't come back in.  Finally my mom said, "Where's the dog?"

That little sucker had dug down about two feet, dragged out a week-old fish carcass and was rollin' around in it.

Whew!  I thought my mom was gonna hit the dog with a shovel and bury it too.

My marnia has a freezer you dump your carcasses in. You bag them and dropem in the freezer. Than they throw them in the dumpster on garbage day. Keeps the smell and the flies down.
