245 Osprey Wiring Diagram

Having several electrical problems with a 1998 245 Osprey, i.e. navigation lights not working, courtesy lights not working, fuse for fishwell pump corroded and broken, wires pulled off switches, etc.

Does anyone have a complete wiring diagram of the 245 Osprey they could share, especially how the fuse/switch panel is wired at the console?

Frankly, there is no such thing.  Pete may have something in his 225 Osprey manual (same console), but I doubt it will help...


Sooo, this is how the switch panel is set up.  There is a 6GA red cable coming from the breaker box in the starboard aft corner behind the access door in the tackle center.  This cable is terminated in a large blue plug, the other side has a 10GA wire feeding the helm switch panel.  It terminates to the first breaker on the starboard end of the panel, then is daisy-chained to every other breaker on the panel.  Off each individual breaker, a 14 or 16GA wire feeds the appropriate switch that each breaker is protecting.  This smaller wire runs to the middle position of the switch.  The 12V+ leads from all your lights, pumps, etc. terminate to the bottom position of each switch, except for the nav lights, which is a DPDT switch, wired differently, this is a drawing as to how tthe NAV/ANC light switch is wired...



If you are not familiar as to how to use a multimeter to determine where you have power and where you don't, here's a little tutorial.

I bought a brand new plug and play panel at the Marine Connection in Ft. Pierce, $165, switches, breakers, everything.  Just plugged it in.  

As far as the wiring, if you are somewhat knowledgeable with basic DC wiring, you'll find it's pretty easy once you dig in for a few minutes.  In a condensed version, here is how it works.  Your devices (lights, pumps etc..) all have their respective grounds (the black wires) going to negative busses, which electrically are all tied to the battery (-) side.  Those same devices have their "hot" (+) wires all going to the switch panel and attached to one side of the associated toggle switch.  The power comes up to the switch panel on one large red wire, and is "daisy chained" or jumped from one breaker to the next, supplying each toggle switch with power on what we call the "line" side.  Once the toggle switch is thrown, it carries that power to the device.  The biggest problem is corrosion at the switches, and the negative buss bars.  There are some easy ways to jump power to each device with the panel pulled away from the console, to see if the device runs/operates, first look at all ground wires and check for "green" "black" around the terminal eyes.

Thanks to both you guys.  This definitely helps.  I've also seen something on the forum about some connectors that are better at preventing corrosion.  What would these be called so I can find some?

Deutsch connectors are great, OMC/BRP has been using them for years in the engine harnesses.  The components are relatively cheap.  The crimper for the pins and sockets?  About $230...

What push button reset breakers/fuses are used with the 245 osprey dash switches or what is a good replacement brand for the original ones?

Also, my manual does not give the breaker/fuse size for the fishwell (located in the floor) pump.  I know this will probably depend on the size of pump that is installed but what is the normal amperage breaker/fuse that is used?

10A will do it for the fishbox pump.  And I've been getting my breakers from sailboatowners.com.  Carling breakers marketed by Blue Seas.  West sells them for $13 a pop, may want to print out that page, see if they'll price match...

I'm moving right along with replacing bad thermal breakers and switches to get things back operational.  I'm still trying to find the wire for the fishwell pump, that one of the PO must have removed, but the only thing I've found is a spare wire for a stern anchor or running light.  Not sure where the PO may have stuck it.

I'm also trying to figure out if my float switch for the bilge is bad or if the fuse is blown or corroded.  It appears that all the designations are gone off the breaker box in the starboard aft corner behind the access door in the tackle center so I can't tell which fuse is for what purpose.

It is a black box that appears to have one red reset button in the upper left corner with several standard buss type twist lock fuses.  Does anyone have a diagram or picture that shows what each fuse is for and what their amperage should be?
