Deck mounted fish box on older AS 222?
« on: February 17, 2006, 10:00:29 AM »
I have a '71 222. My forward deck has the center fishbox with split doors and the storage box with top door and removable vertical panel. I see from some of the pics posted here, on some boats, there is also a box centered  in the main deck just aft of forward deck. On a few pics of project boats that have the decks stripped off, I see the stringers box out this area. Anyone know if my stringer configuration is the same?  Does the transverse stringer have drainage holes? Any recommendations on putting a box here.

Take a look at the classified section of this site. A 1970 222 was just listed and has pictures of the stringer with the deck removed!

 It is like having X-Ray vision!!

Granted I would have to cut the deck out and build a hatch. But what do I do for the box? Glass one in or build a removeable coffin? What about drainage? Thanks.

I had an existing box in the floor of my 1983 222. When I rebulit the deck I enlarged it to hold 5 - 5gallon buckets of chum for sharking. I did this by cutting one side out and rebuilding it with 2 inch thick foam insulation board and epoxy resin.

My boat only has two stringers not three like yours. Also insulating and extending the existing box was easier than building a new one.

If you decide to build an insulated box test for compatability between the foam and the resin. Some resin will melt some types of foam.

My box just drains into the bilge. I have a drain with a plug at the bottom. I have considered adding a macerator pump.
