while I would  have no problem helping someone looking for work,I have a big problem taking people on an all expense paid fishing trip that don't help clean up the boat and gear at the end of the day.no one goes home till its all done, thats just the way it is. :salut:

And that, Pete, is the deal...

I think one of that guy's "friends" was his BIL.  If that's the case, tell him to shopping with his sister!

No problem on this end Bob...I have no problem hiring folks that work hard.

Same on this end Pete. We hit the dock at the end of they day and somebody makes up a whiz-arse excuse about "their wife said, etc...gotta go...."

They just took their last trip.

I agree with Pete.  I will insist on chipping in with my share of the expenses and I will insist on helping clean the boat and whatever else needs done.  You can refuse either or both and that's fine.  I'll just sit and watch.  ;)

I at least want help unloading after an offshore trip.  Most of the time I had rather clean my boat my way and I will tell you to go get a beer and find some shade.  If someone bails as soon as we get back without offering help or cash then I hope they enjoyed their trip because it will be their last invite.  If I still had an offshore boat then the estimated cost will be discussed before the day of the trip.  My current boat does not burn enough gas to matter but an offer makes brownie points.  If it's a long ride back on your boat then I will have the back half of the boat clean by the time we get back to the dock.

Scott, on one trip I had planned for weeks this dude waits until we were 30 miles off shore to say "Oh yeah, I promised my wife I would be back by 1 PM."  My response was "What kind of boat is she picking you up with so I can watch for it."

I could go on for hours about the dipsticks I have been fishing with over the years.  I can say that it was only once for each one of them (some of them it was on their boat).

I have to add that from total strangers from forums I have made some lifelong fishing buddies as well.   :salut:

Well, at least he got over the 5 AM bit...

We're usually on the water by 0600...hit the cast net spots (Mangroves) about 0645, then off we go!!!

I'm with you guys. JJ, no apologies needed...it ain't pretty. Any of us that have owned offshore rides have heard the same crybaby excuses.

First off...time is money at first light. The trip has been planned based on the weather... for days. You've planned, you've prepped...and you've invested a lot of time and money preparing/rigging/gassing up/baiting up/icing up for the trip offshore. As a captain the very last thing you should be doing at 5:15 am is looking at your watch...and waiting on the crew that you have invited. Not pleasant...but have left the dock waiting on no-shows. And not a minute later.  Screw the phone calls.

So you're off. By 8:30 you get to the hole...pretty day...you're trying hard to get on the fish. Then...around 11:30..."um...how long do you think we're gonna be out here? My wife said..."

Well...like your thought process here JJ....here are our numbers, ask her to call on the VHF when she gets out here.

Have seen it all, over the course of running 25 years worth of offshore trips. Have been mostly successful catching fish, have tried to be a prudent captain.  Have always returned boat and crew safely to the dock. Good Lord willing.

But when they get back to the dock and cry...and split...they at that point have divested themselves from the team effort. Doesn't happen often...but...everyone's tired. That's when you see who gives a chit...and see who ain't coming back.
