Hull splashing happens all the time.  My '75 19-6 aquasport was used as a plug here in Tampa.  Hull, inner inner, deck cap, fuel hatch and deck hatch molds were all created.    :silent:

So, Fernando, who did the mold making, and who is selling them now?  Under what name?  Awful lot of effort and money not to create a new boat line...

Well back in 2001 the boat was marketed under the make "Bulldog 20".  He made a few boats here in Tampa, right next to the high and dry you visited a few months back off of Tyson.  He does great work.  He now has a shop over in St. Pete and now has a 23.

Seabob,

I guess you are correct about the pricing!

I've seen the guys who are building the Conch line now, they are not the original. They build one hell of an awesome boat, but not the original. The Original company (Edey & Duff Boatworks), designed and built the boat. Here's an article about these old salts:

I've talked to Will (the main guy at Aeon) back when he ran Bayside Marine Services (I dont know if it's still an active shop or not). Pretty nice guy. About 5 years ago he just finished making the mold for the AEON. I originally went there to talk to him about his live wells (similar concept as the Hammerhead livewells) and he started telling me about the mold: a friend of his is a nautical engineer, had a CAD system, they designed the hull together... (thats the cliff note version from what I can remember). Its a completely different boat though.

It seems to me like a lot of the "florida bay/tower boats" got thier original ideas from the classic aquasports: Gause started rebuilding 22-2 and 196's before developing thier own molds as well as Dorado's 23 and the Shaffer 239 up here in Tampa. All really good versions of something we all love (and have minor obsessions with).  You can even see some of the Aquasport lines in the Parker 23bay and the 22 ProLine Bay.

As other posts have stated: copying or getting hull ideas is widespread in the boat industry. There's a post over on THT (i think or maybe classicmako) about the lawsuit between Pathfinder and Shearwater a few years ago. Really interesting read about how minor - Its always easier to copy something after someone has already done the hard part: being original.

Egmont boats is no more!  I just called the number to catch up with the guy who splashed my hull, when I asked for him I got the "Who is this?".  I spoke with the fellow for twenty minutes or so and apparently the two of them had a falling out and they are not making the boats.

L2F,
Are you sure the lawsuit wasn't between Pathfinder (MBC) and Proline, in regards to PL ripping off the Pathfinder 22 hull?

Alright guys, we all know that hulls are copied, decks as well, but a LOT more leeway there to modify.  Soooooo, that being said, why can't someone start up "Aquasport" again?  In other words, who owns the copyright to the name?  Genmar?  The outfit that bought the remains of Genmar?  The original founders of AS (their families) that the trademark reverted back to when Genmar went belly up?

In other words, what I'm trying to say is, instead of all these knock offs splashing a 19-6 or a 22-2, and calling them "boat du jour", why not simply do the same and call them...Aquasports?

Time to do some digging...

Bob,

I'm sure what you are saying will come true....I'm guessing someone bought the rights to the Aquasport name and is sitting, waiting for the economy to turn. I know that welcraft is back up under new ownership, and I'm sure the same will be true with aquasport. It's really sad.

Genmar and AMF, kiss of death.

Interesting thoughts here boys.

Love2, I guess you meant the English gent, Will Leslie? I was wondering why Bayside's phone was always on answering machine.

You're right...he's a good guy.

And speaking of slicing and dicing...he offers a drop-in casting deck for a 22-2.

We had a similar discussion here a few months back regarding this boat, the model 2000 (scroll down)

Seabob, you could be correct- I read that post several months ago and might have my boats mixed up.

Gran- Yes, the english will, haha. Thats funny about the "buying thier liner for our hulls. I talked to Will's wife about the exact same thing and she said the hulls were drastically different and thier's wouldnt "drop in" the original hulls. Sure would make things very easy if they did. Or at least getting a 1 piece cap with an anchor hatch. Might eliminate the stress cracks I've heard a few people having on the back transom cap area where they join the original cap.

I say we start a Trust and buy the Aquasport name for future endevors.

hahaha if you spend 70 k on a 22-2, you need your head examined.

If you spend $70k on an Aeon, you need your head examined; regardless of whether you can afford it or not. And if you put $70k into a 22-2, you'd have the nicest boat on the water.

Out of curiosity, Bob, where would you put said $70k if it were going into a 22-2...?

Its really not that hard to spend $50K plus on a 22-2 total rebuild with brand new motor, rigging etc. Add a few more goodies and toys and I know I could personally reach the $70K mark and still want more. Could I ever sell it for what I have in it, no way, same thing with any brand new boat though, drive it off the lot and lose 20% at least.
Would I trade it for a Aeon or Dorado, no way my old flatback is one of a kind and a labor of love,  neither one of those new boats would help me catch more fish or do my job any better than what I now have.
Now maybe I would buy a 24 yellowfin with a 350 v-rod and tower if cash was no object but I would still keep the flatback.
My boat is a custom tool of my trade, made by me for me.
