My 96 225 SWS was the best carb'd motor I ever had, and the fuel burn was not bad, what year is your 200?  I would go with the 200, you pull the throttles back for cruise, and you will get excellent mileage, plus you'll have the power and speed if yoiu ever need it, with the 150, you will always be in the upper RPM range.

I don't know what year it is.  My brother basically donated it to me a few years ago after not being able to diagnose an overheat issue at WOT.  Ran great all day at cruise but within a short time of WOT overheat alarm would go off.  I don't think he could ever figure out the problem.  I'll try to get the year of the motor.  He had it on a 22 Mako and said it wasn't bad on fuel.  I'm just nervous, I guess, especially w/ todays prices.  Plus it's been sitting for a few years.  But honestly, I don't really have a choice.  I can't afford a new motor and it's what I have so it's going on the boat!

My buddy's first boat was a 69 22FB center console that had twin Evinrude 50's on it.  When one seized up he replaced them with a Johnson or Evinrude 112 commercial.  Boat ran fine with that motor and we went about 20 miles south of Nantucket and got into some sharks and tuna.  When we weren't doing that, we were usually wakeboarding or waterskiing behind it.  I just saw it recently on a mooring with a 4 stroke Yamaha on it-  I'll try to take a pic next time I see it.

I guess the big difference between the flatback 22 and the FF is the extra weight and the v-hull design, (mine is the modified V).  Does that really make a big difference?  Again, all I really need to do is cruise economically around 24 MPH.  Sorry to hijack the thread.

Fitz and FlounderPounder,

Thank you both, you two guys seem to be on top of the 'fuel burn rate' topic.

I don't want to drop big dollars on an expensive devise, ie FlowScan...     Can you recommend any other fuel-flow measuring devise, perhaps below $200.00, that will provide (with no other bells and whistles)  the amount of fuel burned across a given period of time?

Some other devises were mentioned above, but not favorably..... can anyone let me know of something inexpensive that worked out OK for you?  That would be greaaaaaaaaaat.

Thanks much, T.

Does that network into an existing Lowrance device(GPS/Sounder) or does it come with a dedicated monitor?

No bells and whistles, how about the classic dowel rod, sharpie and a Timex

A Flo Scan works very well and seems to have a long operational lifespan (at least mine does). Expensive? of course, its for a boat (though they can be used in other applications) but then so is:
Hydraulic steering, trim tabs (hydraulic or electric), hard tops, electronics, properly sized battery cables, batteries themselves, fuel tanks yada, yada, yada.

Guessing too, is fairly inexpensive, till you guess wrong.

I'm 16 years on the flowscan in my boat with only one sensor upgrade in 08'. I'm a little surprised that no one has given them a run for their money with comparable lower cost unit. They seem to dominate the market with an excellent quality and expensive unit. I guess you can look at the ROI in fuel savings to justify the cost over time.

T,
Have I got a deal for you   .   I just happen to have a Brand New Northstar F-210 Fuel Flow meter.  http://www.northstarnav.com/upload/Nort ... s/F210.pdf
I will send it to you.  When I repowered from the original Johnson to the Yamaha HPDI I bought this meter ($125.00) online.  I installed it and was not happy with the performance, my neighbor also bought one, he has a Mercruiser I/O set up.  His seems to work pretty well, from what I have read there are a couple of reasons why I was not satisfied with this guage.  First, they don't perform well on DFI outboards, because we have these VST (Vapor Seperator Tank/s) that fill and shut off fuel flow until the HP pump needs more, then fills again, like a very large carb float bowl.  This continuous flow interuption plays heck with the processor I guess in the meter.  Secondly, I did not go through all the calibration steps that the manual says you need to do.  Since you have the I/O set up, it may work great for you?  From what Dan (my neighbor) says, the GPH read out does vary some until he gets on a normal cruise rpm for a biit, but the total fuel burn is pretty accurate, so you can learn your MPG, and range pretty easily.  I found a steal of deal at MCL in Ft. Pierce for a brand new OEM Yamaha Fuel Management system $299.00 with guage, harness and transducer, and installed that.  It works great since it is designed for the Yamaha HPDI.

This wonderful prize package can be yours for..... :?:  CHEAP.  If you want to give it a whirl, PM me your address out there, I will send it to you.  You hook it up and give it a try for a while, if you like it, send me $50 bucks.  Have a great labor day, hope somebody gets to enjoy it... I think in a few hours I will be able to launch the Osprey in the driveway.

It came with a dedicated small display but the device itself can be/is part of a network - I just have one thing on the network.  I think it may be NMEA compatible but don't remember for sure.

Hey, how bout the Kid who started this thread?

Thanks but don't need it. For $60 I can get one to attach to my Lowrance network.

Well, I'm back. No fish in the cooler but it was fun. My buddy was using a garage sale reel spooled with 100-200 yards Dacron. Wouldn't you know that is the only rod that takes a hit...and spools him. He's a rookie and didn't check his drag. Else he would have known it was on or off. Woops!!!

Still fun. Made it out 50 miles, found the break, trolled another 50 and headed home for a grand total of 150 miles on 60-65 gallons leaving us 35 to spare. But, there is always a but, man we burned through some oil. Manged with a half gallon to spare but I was a bit nervous. Seems I'm burning a little more then 50-1. Got to check that out....and bring plenty extra maybe x3 for safe measure.

Anyways, resume hijack.

Kid,

Sorry for the extra lube burn...you gotta chalk that up to a big weekend... :thumright:

Haven't checked with our Social Director yet...but Lewis is all about Aquasport interaction...so here's something to chew on.

How about we consider reciprocal fishing trips among club members? You may want to come king mackeral or grouper fishing here in Carolina...I may want to come your way and go halibut/tuna/shark fishing.

This could be a neat thing...and a great next step.

Come on over!

Got a spare room ready for just the occasion.

Might be a good topic for another thread.

Over here we have a bite of some sort between April and October with July/August/September having teh most variety.
