1976 22-2 thinking of buying
« on: August 31, 2011, 11:45:22 AM »
Hi Guys,

I am looking at purchasing a 1976 22-2, hull only and want some opinions.

I currently have a 1972 19-6 open with 100HP suzuki outboard.

This 22-2 only has driver pedestal seat, gas tank is original, hull seems good, transom has 4" custom extension with a 3/4" aluminum plate and a crack on the left side (see pic).  Obviously it would need some work but might be worth the money.

One major question is would the 100 hp sufficiently power the 22-2?

All comments welcome, see photos.

just my .02,don't think you would be happy with the performance of that 100 on that boat, maybe 175 to 200,looks like a great project boat

I agree with pete, that poor motor would not last.  I'd go with a 200 or larger.

Keep looking unless you really like the boat. It will need a complete rebuild and a new gas tank and I really don't see the market for Family Fisherman versions to even think about getting near your investment back on resale. The 100 HP on that boat will not get the job done. She is probably extra heavy with wet stringer foam and wet transom core.

I've always wanted to ask this:  Is the hull of this '76 model (below the rub-rail) identical to the earlier models?  (not flatbacks, but '74. '75's?)

In other words, was the taller 'cap' just Aquasport's updated look?

Just wondering.

Yes, it's the same 12° hull with a different cap and inner liner.

Something that might also be interesting- the CCP's are basically the same hull as the original early 70's 12° hulls; they increased the deadrise and added taller caps on the gunwales and changed the interior layouts.  If you look closely, especially toward the prow, you can see some of the original hull and the rub rails have the same "shear" lines.

Thanks for the input.

I can grab this hull for less than $500 and was hoping to at the least put the bow rail on my 19-6 and then maybe a few other items.

Just thinking outloud here:

The challenge of buying that hull for $500 is that even if you strip off some of the components for your other boat, you now have an old, trashed hull sitting around.  It's hard to get them hauled away...at least it is in Houston.   You can probably get a s/s rail made with Taco tubes/fittings for about the same cost...

The FF hull is the same as the XF and the CCP - 20 degree deadrise deep-V.  Aquasport used different caps on the 3 models.

This 22-2 FF looks pretty rough, even at $500, and a 100 would not push it well.  These were offered with twin 85s in the day and really need 150HP to perform well - 200 or more is better.  The hull is rated for 245HP.

You can usually get an FF pretty inexpensively, cuz most folks these days want a CC or an WAC.  Look on eBay or Craig's and you will see what I mean - here's a lot better-looking FF on eBay for $600 with a 200 Merc:

Let's say the boat above goes for more - maybe $1000 or $1200 or even $1500 - you are still money ahead before you start, because a new gas tank will cost you at least $600, and you still have to buy a motor...

Great insight Capt John, I really appreciate you guys and this forum.

I am going to wait it out and keep enjoying my 19-6 and keep my eyes open.
