Made some progress this weekend.
I'm thinking of glassing the deck with 1708, is that overkill? I saw another member do it with his 170. I need to use 1708 to tab the deck to the liner anyway. Ideas? I just want to make sure the floor is really strong. Would one layer of 1708 do the trick?

Got the stringers foamed and glassed this weekend. Going back tonight and glassing in the 3/4 ply caps.
A little advice for anyone with a 170, the stringers are THIN. If you are planning on pouring new foam, reinforce the stringers before hand. I used the 4LB foam, which states that the foam will only expand toward the path of least resistance. I got lucky and grabbed a few clamps before the foam blew the damn stringers apart. ALSO, I would suggest doing this in about 4-5 pours. I did the math in my head and tried to outsmart my common sense, and tried to pour an entire stringer at once. Don't do this. This is, in my opinnion why I almost destroyed my stringers. Anyways, everything is fine, and that 4LB foam is rock solid. Very impressed with the product.
Check out the pictures!

Some really good info on pouring foam! Looks really nice!
To answer your previous question I would use one layer of 1708 on the bottom of the deck and two on the top. Then tab it in to the liner. Capt. Matt has a great reason for this in a thread that I can't find. Think dropping anchors on the deck.

So, for the sake of keeping this boat light, I rolled resin into the bottom side of the decking ply, and will be painting the underside with bildge paint as well. This should keep the moisture out. The deck will be tabbed with 1708 biax with mat, and then covered with 1208 biax with mat. From what everyone says, this should be more than enough for my little 17.
is the resin and paint on the underside not enough? I have a TON of chop strand 3/4 oz I could use.

you'll get lots of opinions on that last question.
Was recommended by a wooden boat builder years ago to only use resin on the bottom side of a wood deck and keep the area vented as well as possible, the idea is that moisture can escape through the resin if needed & the wood will be fine.
I aquired a boat which had a replacement wood deck w/glass on the top & bottom, couldn't have been much more rotten as the previous owner made some mistakes which let water in. If the water never got in who knows maybe it would have been alright, but poorly sealed screws ruined the deck.
When rebuilding that same boat I used 1 layer of 1708 and one layer of 10oz woven on top of 5/8" BC plywood, 1 coat of thinned and 1 coat of reg. resin on the bottom. That was in 1996? I cut a piece out a few years ago, heres a pic after 10+ years in S Fl, no cover on the boat just sits on the trailer with the hatches open-
Just make sure you don't give moisture a chance of getting into the wood & it'll be fine.

Fletch,
Been keeping an eye on your project, looks great. Im just cleaning out stringers on my 19 6 here in NJ, Ill be putting a new topic in when I get the hang of the picture thing.
Does using the 3/4 plywood for stringer caps allow you to keep the old floor height? Or are you raising the floor up? Just curious, seems 3/4 on my mess would be higher.
Thanks,
Sean

I will be using caulk with every screw that goes in that deck, also, she will remain well ventilated. SO, I think I'm OK proceeding as planned.
The 3/4 caps will raise my deck about 1/2 inch. With the 3/4 decking/ Glass/ Etc. My decks should be raised abour 1.25 inches. This should help keep my feet dry....er.
hahaha I gave up on the picture thing and just posed everything in a timeline format on Blogger.

STRINGER CAPS IN!!!
Glassing in the tank coffin on Thursday, then the deck goes in.
For those members who live in the south, you have no idea how good it feels to finally have the warm weather to do the glass work. I sat staring at my boat for 5 months, with all of my materials purchased, just waiting for the weather to cut me a break. Full speed ahead, I'm hoping to splash her by July 4th.

We are pretty much professional goofballs. Put a few more pictures of us being kids.
We are generally fun people to be around. Getting hitched June 29th, then spending a week in the caymans, gettin some fishing done. Did I mention the woman LOVES to fish?
I am a lucky dude.

Whats up dudes??
Been a few weeks away from the boat, been busy with family things, and spent last week in South Florida for my Bachelor party. I survived.
Was out on peanut island on Saturday, and saw a few really nice Classic AS's. Especially a navy blue 196 (I think) with a t top and bracket. I'm almost positive the guy is a member, if anyone knows who it is, let him know his boat rocks.
Anyways, as many of you know I had some setbacks, as someone stole my electrical wiring off my door step, but, this weekend I SHOULD have the deck glued and screwed.
PS, all the way up here in PA, ran into a Classic AS member at the local west marine. Feels kinda cool to be part of this club!

Wow....this weekend was really fun. My boat currently looks like the place where wires go to die. I wanted to run all the rigging before I glassed in the floors, just in case I had to remove the rigging tubes. Anyhow, everthing is all set for the deck to be completely installed this week.

Very nicely done!
While everything is still wide open are you going to leave some line in between compartments as messenger lines? I wish there were some left in the bilge of the Osprey to make life a little easier pulling a new bilge switch wire..
