drain plug thoughts
« on: August 26, 2011, 10:23:07 AM »
Hi Guys and Gals,

My 1972 19-6 has and existing Garboard drain plug that was loose and spun when I put the plug in.  I have been getting some water in my bilge and suspect it is through there so I removed it with the intention of replacing it.  My question here is what is the better plug the Garboard or standard T handle or flip lock?  I trailer the boat so it goes in and out quite often and I think that is why it loosened up.  I am also thinking that the t or flip would be an easier no tool installation.

Thanks for you insight.

I would go with a screw-in plug.  The flip handle plug is easier, but you just have to ask what happens if it comes loose while you are in the water?     Flip handle plugs are great on the inside where you can see them or in a livewell, but on the outside - well you could get in major trouble with a missing plug - and you know if would only come loose 15 miles offshore, not at the ramp...

Check out the latter half of this video I made, shows the Orcas drain plug I installed in my customer's McKee Craft.  I LOVE this drain plug!

I have fun with them Scott!  Sometimes a vid just really shows what the owner wants/needs to see about his boat, as opposed to pics.  And, yes, OMG, I do cuss sometimes!  But then, I don't submit them for a rating...

Thanks guys, I will definitely look into those Orca's.  I re-installed my Garboard for the time being and then address it in the off season along with my other projects.

And...."Sea Dog" offers both bronze and s/s versions of this "captive" style plug, but it's round and appears to fit the same screw holes as the original Aquasport plugs.

Google "Sea Dog Captive Garboard Drain Plug" or cut & paste:

C,
If I'm not mistaken, SeaDog also has a nylon version...
