FL West Coast Scallops
« on: August 22, 2011, 05:02:39 PM »
Anyone been Scalloping this season?  I've never been.  I didn't get to go this year so I'm itching to go this year.   I was just looking for any reports and the best place to launch from?  I'm in Pinellas so a southern Hernando county ramp would be best for me.

Thanks!

Wing, according to the locals, you want to try Bayport.  PM Blue Agave on that one.  Straight up 19 to 50, west on 50 a few miles, then hang a right to Bayport...

We went this year.  We got our limit in three hours.  We went out of Chassahowitzka.  It is just north of Bayport.  There are scallops this year.  They are deeper than normal.  At least when we went.  Oh yeah don't run down the Chaz unless you like buying props and lower units or have a shallow running skiff.

I have only been once this year and we had no problem catching our limit, went on the 2nd of July.  Spoke with a buddy who went last weekend and he said he had no problem catching his limit.  Good luck!

We went twice so far out of Steinhatchee, 5 weeks ago and last weekend.....saw 10-20 of them in the sand near grass edges (could have used a rake) in 5-8 ft north out of Steinhatchee limited in 30 min....best I've seen.  Going back in 3 weeks.  They were big too.

Well I went out of Bayport yesterday and had a blast.  This was my first time scalloping so there was a learning curve.  I didn't know the waters or even where to look for them..  Found my way out the channel and I spotted the flotilla of boats with dive flags up.  So that narrowed down where I should start looking!  I brought my girlfriend, my Friend John and his son and daughter.  We all had fun snorkeling around.  I was surprised to find a small reef that was barely four feet below the surface.   We limited out with ten gallons.  Cleaning them was a learning curve too.   We all are sunburned and found sore muscles we didn't know we had but I can't wait to go again!  Now I just have to go get some butter and garlic!

Here are some pics of the fruits of our labor:

Bucket full of scallops that is about 1/4 of our catch:

My friend John took a bucket full of that catch home with him.  We cleaned the remaining catch last night and this morning.  Here's the finished product almost five pounds of succulent scallops!
