Were you in Pompano at the time.

Here's where you didn't want to be.

A National Weather Service-Miami Radar image recorded on 24 August 1992 at 4:35 EDT [08:35 UTC] superimposed on a street map by the Hurricane Research Division of NOAA indicates the most powerful winds within the northern eyewall (conditions greater than 48 dBZ) made landfall between SW 152 St. (Coral Reef Drive) and SW 184 St. (Eureka Drive) in the Perrine/Cutler Ridge area.

Waypoint #1 during that sad year.

Yep, you guys nail everything down.  We will be thinking about you.

Thanks guys. The models show it tracking east....but its 700 miles wide. At the very least I'm expecting sustained at 50 to 60. So gonna go ahead and get tightened down, take no chances.

I keep remembering Hugo...it was supposed to landfall here in Wilmington....4 hours before it was to hit, it veered hard left, slammed Charleston, then tore up Charlotte.

Models are great.. but you never know.

Yeah I was here for Hugo... It was supposed to make a "dog leg turn" (I'll never forget that meteorological term) and hit N.C., but well, you know the story.  We stayed here for it, lived in Goose Creek at the time which was one of the hardest hit areas... At one point we thought the roof of the house was coming off and ran across the street during the eye to take refuge with a neighbor to ride out the rest of the storm.  Turns out it was the large oak tree in the back yard that had fallen on the roof and was bouncing around in the wind.  They don't make houses like they used to...

But to the point, the Hurricane models in 1989 weren't nearly as accurate as they are today, so the projected tracks should be 300 miles more or less correct ...

One of the prognosticators said this morning they are +/- 200 NM now.

Absolutely Jess, the models are much more accurate now. Hugo hit in '89. A very strong Cat 3, bordering 4 when it hit you folks, 22 years ago.

In recent times, Katrina's predicted track was correct, all models were in agreement. The federal government had a five day window to get supplies/support/staging areas near there. They failed miserably.

This one...I don't know. Don't like the size of it. JJ informs(and thanks) the predicted track at this point is plus or minus 200 nm.

Close enough to engage the pucker factor here. All I can think of is Hugo failing to take that predicted "dog-leg" offshore turn as Jessie noted. And want to go on record now and say that Cape Fear (Southport) and the Cape Fear River have  been an absolute hurricane magnet in the past. Although NONE of the models predict eye landfall here... Irene can go her own way. Best case...it passes 100 miles plus offshore of us...can easily knock out power here, prepared for that.

Watching the Weather Channel. Hurricanes are big biz for them. 24 hour full coverage....wonder what a 30 second spot on the Weather Channel brings tomorrow?

TWC in 'cane season excels at selling fear/nail biting/ratings.

Betcha Home Depot and Slowe's are slugging it out tonight for ad placement...pretty damn sad.

If..... I will say it again, If........ any of you guys stay near the shore with this thing coming up. I think I can say this for all of us. Our prayers are with you! Please think it through and make the right decision. If you haven't checked the bouys this is the link to the one 150NM off Canveral.
Look at the wave heights!  At the time I am posting this it is recording 29.2 ft and growing! The wind is at 50 knots and increasing.

Just be careful and if any of you need anything after it blows through call me and I will load the truck and trailer up and head that way.

Guys, Lewis called this afternoon, and said "Whatever you need...just tell me. I'll load the truck...and I'm heading over."

Lew...thank you. And know you would do it. But have been working hard here at the homestead to be prepared.

Lewis is our new Social Director....and deservedly so. He cares about our well-being. Not just mine in this difficult time...yours too when the time comes. Lew...thanks...and a thumbs up on the past, present, and future.

Presently....we're ready...we have given it our best shot...and the calls/pm's from you all... thanks so much.

Hang loose...Reckon a generator can charge a laptop?  Will report best possible.

Thanks guys.
