HELP PLEASE 120 v-4 sounds like idles on 1 cylinder
« on: August 15, 2011, 09:34:31 PM »
ok so here is the problem i have a 120 johnson with vro and at idle it sounds like it only runs on 1 cylinder, i have replaced all 4 coils with new parts replaced the power pack cleaned fuel tank replaced all fuel lines and primer bulb cleaned carbs. i replaced power pack do to an issue with the motro only running up to 3000 rpm`s and concluded it was the S.L.O.W causing that problem but now it just sounds like it only runs on 1 cylinder.

She's probably misfiring, running on 3.  1 cylinder, she'd be shaking like a beeyatch!

What do the plugs look like?

Is your VRO pump working right,on my old 175 it would run rough untill you gave it gas then die the VRO was shot hooked up a fuel pump and had no problems after with that.

Check compression and see if you have a blown headgasket; 2 adjacent cylinders with low compression. Look for oily residue running down the block from the upper crankshaft seal, pull the gearcase and see if you have oily, gas residue running down the driveshaft, indicating a bad lower crankshaft seal. This can often explain the situation of an engine that is getting "some" fuel and good spark but won't fire on the cylinder. Basically, the incoming fuel charge is being blown through the faulty seal(s) and creating a lean condition that wont fire, yet appears to be getting fuel. I'm making a lot of assumptions that the carbs, fuel delivery, spark quailty and timing are acceptable.

k pulled the gear case earlier this past week to do water pump change it was dry and i seen no signs of any possibles leakage of any kind so that should rule out that seal i was planning on a compression test today sometime i have to go borrow a friends compression tester some body needed mine more than i did lol. a standard automotive tester is fine with these 2 strokes right just making sure.

The proper way to test compression is crank the engine through 4 compression strokes only; with the throttle butterflies held wide open. This gives you the true health and sealing ability of each cylinder. A lot of people just crank the engine until the needle stops moving on the tester which tells you nothing about the engines true compression. Just make sure that the compression tester is not a long reach thread. Try to keep the exposed threads on the tester about the same lenght as the spark plug thread to avoid having the piston hit the tester end.
