Hey seabob4 or GF

I need to change my deck drains on my 1981 222ccp. But I can’t see them. Soooo I have to feel what I think is their. The nut that is hold it in place doesn’t feel like a hex. Is their a tool to remove them? Or is it a hex and my fingers are letting me down.

Salt, I have to bet it is a large hex backing nut.  The real fun is going to be getting a pair of channel locks on there blind-folded to back them off...

Jesse has a great idea on the inspection mirror.  You may be even able to secure it in place to get a view of the nut when trying to back it off...

Salt,
Look at the last photo in the supplied link.
http://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?topic=5969.0

It shows the hex nut on the "thru hull" drain. It also shows how the drain hose is attached to the deck/cockpit drain but the drain attachment is hidden. Since the deck/cockpit drain is a 90 degree fitting, you may have trouble feeling the nut. I would think that it looks similar to this.

Good luck.

thanks guys. I have leaks in the right angles, on both sides. Sooo I'm replacing everything with ss. I think their leaking because of a deforming of the plastic, from the guy that had her before me. Over tighting the clamps. I had to replace a hose and man you should have seen the indent in the hose. Also why I thought they where not hex nuts. Was I feel indents in the nut. Almost like they where round with finger indents.

Here's a link to a deck drain someone (maybe Bob or Bob) posted a while back.

Here's a shot of mine when I replaced hoses a few weeks ago. Yup, used camera, mirror and flashlight in order to "see". Since you're going to replace them anyway, you might be able to attack them from the top enough to loosen the nut underneath or push through from above.

Well got one out. I now know what the problem was and why things didn’t feel right. What the guy did was, use a 1 ½ inch straight thru hull fitting. Then cut off the hose barb. Then used what is called a tight quarter 90 degree schedule 40 gray fitting. Which had internal threads on the short end and a hose barb on the long end. He then threaded this on to the thru hull threads with pvc glue. Which would have been ok, if they where the same thread. He then ground off the barb, so it would fit the plastic corrugated hose he used.(which to me was the wrong hose to be using for a scupper drain) After he cut it off to fit. Which ment the clamp was trying to hold on to the corrugation and a straight piece of pipe. Since their was no barbs to hold on to. So he put bath tube caulk. Which washed out over time and began to leak. What he should have done, was used reinforced hose and heated it to fit the larger barb.  He then would have only had to clamp it while it was warm and it would have sealed. With know problem. So now I’m replacing everything with the right stuff. I had to cut thing out with a multi tool.

Yea skyliner4444 thats what it should have looked like and what I would have excepted.

Skyliner 4444...kudos to you for an excellent post. You have eliminated the guesswork/speculation. Thanks.

Salt...unless you want to spend the big bucks for SS deck fittings....SB has made me a believer of Marelon hardware for above-deck use. Specifically, Talon-spec/style hardware. Looks good too.

Gran I was looking at some on those fittings, but didn’t know much about them. So I’m glad to hear from some one who has used them. I  was considering them thru the deck and ss thru the hull. I may yet go that way. I’ve already got my ss thru hull fittings. I like the look of ss on the hull side.

Saltfly - sorry I'm late in the reply, but it looks like you have a good plan forward.  The deck drains on the CCPs are a real PITA to work with, as you now know.  It looks like your boat has already been doctored a bit - too bad someone did not do a first quality job...

Thanks for the post and see ya on the water!

When you asked for help...its evident you did your homework on CCP's. To your credit, you went with some of the best

The SS on the outer hull is a statement. Shows quality work, and a quality hull.

The Marelon internal fixture...take a second look at the link. Hopefully there will be additional input. Thanks. Good work.

Ok guys I’m stuck again  . The marine dealer I deal with here. Can’t get the marelon 90 degree 1 1/2 fitting. Only the straight one. Were are your guys getting them? Or are you using a straight fitting with an elbow? And if so, were are you getting them? :?:

Ok I now have both sides out. Soooo I sat down and looked at what was done. In principle, the guys idea was sound. His problem on the port side (were I started) was he cross threaded the right angle fitting on to the thru hull fitting. Which he then took back off and glued it. Instead of replacing it. Then of course he used the swimming pool hose. Which I never use, especially below the water line. Then he ground off the barb on the right angle part. So nothing was sealing. Soooo I’m replacing everything. Which I only intend to do once.
