Trim tabs
« on: July 30, 2011, 10:16:58 AM »
I know this is an old subject here. but I'm still going ask. I going to put them on my 222ccp. I like the Lenco over the bennetts. Their easer to install through that small hatch that I have to reach down into and I don‘t have to deal with a pump with hydraulic fluid. Now I keep hearing about how they drift and that corrosion builds up on the rod and will tair up  the gasket on the actuator. The drift is what I’m concerned about. Since I don’t keep my boat in the water but on a trailer. I wash the whole thing down after every use. I also am wondering about the three year limited warranty they give, were Bennett give a 5. They most not trust their system if their warranty is two year less then Bennett’s. Plus they don’t even proved a switch. How in the hell do they expect you to use them with out a switch. I’m sure it’s just a gimmick to look like their cheaper to buy. Now I'm sure some of you are now saying. Your talking your self right into the Bennett’s. Noooooo I’m not. I hate the thought of trying to get that dam pump instiled through the 8 inch hatch. And those pumps can be a pain in the butt, when you start having a problem with them. I’ve heard some real horror stores about them. So with all of that . What do you guys think Would I be making a mistake with the lenco’s? And is the drifting problem as bad as some say? :?:

Well with the pump. I like a number of other old farts. Hang out at one of the marinas near me. Soooo I get to talk  a lot with the Capt’s. Of a number of the charter boats. The pump problems they have, come from creaking in reservoir housing dumping hydraulic fluid in to the bilge. I’ve also heard one complain that a hose ruptured dumping fluid. As well as sludge build up in the fluid. Now I know some of these things could be prevented with a little maintenance. So that’s where I have a problem with them. Working inside of a 8” hatch. And no I’m not going to try and put a bigger hatch cover their just to get to a pump. I also know some have put them in their console. Got to much in there now. Don’t want a pump in their to. A friend is a light tackle guide over on the Chesapeake. He has a Jones brothers, with lenco’s. He has been using that boat almost every day through out the year, for 6 years now and had no problems with his lenco actuators. But I’ve never asked him about the drift problem. And he is only one person. that’s why I like to hear from more people. If more are having or hearing of a lot of problems with them. Then I’ll bite the bullet and get Bennett’s. Of course if I get off my old butt and close in the transom and add a bracket. I could put the pump above the deck. So if the lencos come out on the short end of the stick. It may make me do the transom faster. And thanks for the post back. One against the Lenco's. Thats a start. :thumright:

go with Bennett's. out of every boat in our marina with lencos, 90 % of them had had atleast one actuator replaced in the first 2 years of use and the other not too far after that. and they almost always get stuck in the full down position. if its not the seals leaking water in rusting up the motor, its the gears inside getting stripped out...

of all the Bennett's in the marina, the only thing ive ever seen is the reservoir needs to be topped off every few years... my dads '86 searay has its original Bennett pump, hoses, wiring, and actuators, and they all still work perfectly

I am impressed with the Bennett stuff.  I just installed the m120's on my 200.  We have a Bennett employee that hangs out on the site and has taken care of a bunch of our members.  As a company, they care.

And e have a direct link to them!

I have another question. You guys that have the 222ccp. Were are you mounting the pump for your bennetts? When I look through the hatchs. All I see are stringers. Unless I go into the top hatch. But then the only thing to mount to is the bait well. And I'm not going to do that. Again working down inside of a 8" hatch, isn't the easiest place to work. It a down right pain in the arus.

Thanks capt. Bob. Thats were I thought most would mount them. But I'm trying to stay away from mounting one their. If I go with the bennetts. I've got just to much in my console. I keep every thing I want to keep dry in dry bays their. I have started to pull every thing apart today. To try and find a small leak that has started. in about 8 hours on the water I'm getting about 20 gals in the bilge. I just put a hose with a plug I made to fit around it into the scupper drains. it looks as if the water may be getting in the front deck drain. but the dam hose is dry as a bone on the out side. I'm going to replace all of my fittings with ss ones, along with new renforced hoses starting this week. Once I pull the old ones. I'll see how much sealent is still left. Then I'll put in the new ones with 5200. That may stop the leak. And by then I may find a place to mount the pump. If I go with the bennetts. which it seems most are using. And if their is one thing I've learned getting to be an old fart. And that is not to be close mined and listen to what people are telling you. :thumleft:

I have a 25 year old set of Bennetts that still work perfectly.  And they have been in water for most of the 25 years.  I would give them an A+ for reliability and reputation.

Thanks GF. I'm leaning toward the bennett m120's. But I'm still up in the air as to were to install the pump.

Saltfly,

If you need more tubing to mount the pump in a location other than the stern let me know.  Also we make a stainless steel mounting bracket to mount the pump on a horizontal surface if that helps.

Thanks Tom. Right now I’m leaning toward mounting it alongside the splash well above the scupper drain. Were it will be out of the way. I will have to build a cover of some kind to keep it out of the weather and harms way. I will also have to get it first. Then lay it out to see how much tubing and wire is their.
