cleaned out the carbs, actually looked pretty clean to begin with. took it to the boat ramp and it started and ran for about 2 minutes and then coughed and died. Couldnt get it started after that.  Taking it to a mechanic I guess.

Anyone know of a good deal on a 150-200 4stroke? haha

so far...
new fuel line from the tank to the water separater/fuel filter
new spark plugs
carb job
new batteries

Still wont stay running for more than a minute.  Any ideas?
after a few attempts to start- it gives the spitting sound, then goes back to cranking but never starts.

Have you checked to see if it has spark after it dies? Can we assume that after it sits for a lenght of time it will restart?

after installing the new plugs- gapped to .003th- it cranked and ran for about 2 minutes on the hose in my yard, then spit and died. couldnt get it to stay running after that. The primer valve is staying solid now though and the shot glass size filter thats inside the cowling stays full of fuel as well.
it almost sounds like its not running on all cylinders- like its quieter when it is running for a minute or 2 before it dies. I dont have my gauges to do a compression check.

When i was replacing the fuel line, i re-ran the throttle cables to clean up the center console wiring and twisted the settings on those a little (tried to get them back as close as possible to the original settings). but i dont think that could have that much to do with it, could it?

Throttle and shift cable should have nothing to do with this issue.

pull the the plugs before you start it next time, make note of how clean or dirty each is, run it till it dies, then check each plug again.  you're looking for consistency, might be able to narrow down which cylinder(s) is giving you a problem that way.

You did mean to say .030" not .003" cause if you gapped them @.003" there is your problem! I thought the gap is actually .040 if I'm not mistaken

rebuilt the carbs again with Evinrude carb kits. adjusted the idle and its starting everytime and running pretty smoothly. EXCEPT! the bottom right carb- there's a very steady drip that is either coming from the seal between the bowl and carb body or that "reed/tube" that you can see from the that is in the middle (the brass reed right above the bowl screw). What could be causing this? Its the only carb thats doing it.

-I was running the engine in my yard with the front air box off and it was running pretty smoothly. So my thinking is that the carb has been doing this gas leak/drip thing for a while, that would pool up in that box and basically choke out the rest of the carbs/engine- which was causing the engine to stall out. And why after a waiting a few minutes after it would do that (unknowingly giving it time to breathe) it would restart.



The leak is coming from that center brass tube that is between the 2 bottom carb mounting bolts.

I'll guess.

Is that the route the outside air takes to enter the float bowl (brass tube)?
Maybe the float height is too high and fuel is backing out the chamber? :scratch:

ahh, ok gotcha, so the float is too low allowing too much air to enter- and then overflowing the fuel. So I should just correct the float level and hopefully that will correct the problem... Thanks Bob! I'll give that a shot as soon as it stops raining!

Bob while you are here. What is causing my 1991 140 evinrude to only throttle up to 3200 rpm's then starts to act like the rev limiter is killing the engine? :scratch:

a beautiful sight! BIG Thanks everyone for the suggestions and help! Still need to adjust the throttle linkage and idle adjustment arm a little, but she's running! Took a 1/2 hour cruise around Tampa Bay today before a nasty thunderstorm cloud started moving in over Gandy, ended up towing in a guy who's motor was overheating.


Perfect start before the clouds moved in! I like the view of the bow much more without the rail.
