first time out
« on: July 03, 2011, 01:28:36 AM »
I finally got my boat back out last night with its new (2003) Johnson 4 stroke 140hp motor.
I love it she runs about 35 top end I think with a different prop I would get a little faster but the old 176 2 stroke only did 44 at best.I didn't catch much but it sure was good getting out on the boat.

Yes, catching fish is a bonus, just being out there is the deal.... Glad you got her going, and everything ran well. As far as the prop goes, if your hitting your max RPM, and not over revving, your pretty much done.

What size Aqua do you have?

I have the same outboard, painted black.  I'm running a 21" prop, RPM's topping out @5900RPM.  I get about 42mph with the wind at my back.  The newer 4strokes are designed to spin pretty fast.  If you take it much past 6000RPM's, the rev-limiter will drop the motor to about 1000RPM's, then you'll have to shut it down and start it back up to reset it.

Same boat as I have, I also went out for the first time yesterday, I had water in the fuel problems.

Not many XF200 owners on here,  Just Wingtime,  Seagate & me unless i've missed some. Can any of you guys tell me what the ride height should be under normal conditions, say 50% fuel on board.

Mine seems pretty low in the water especially after taking on some after about 3 hours afloat. the bait box drains are underwater. It's fine at full throttle on the outward trip but after bobbing around for a few hours (even though the bilge pump is working again) when I have been running for about 5 minutes at full blast on the homeward trip the engine dies, then after a couple of attempts it stars right up. but only to die again after about 15  seconds of being on the plane. Sounds to me like fuel starvation as it will run fine at about 5 knots. no alarms sounding, oil in the tank & plenty of fresh fuel.
Even after the bilge pump has stopped running, the boat seems pretty low in the water and loads of water comes out when plug is removed.

You should consider making your Facebook profile public, or posting the videos on youtube - I can't see the videos due to your privacy settings.

Do you have access to your bilge? Can you see water in the bilge?  These engines are fairly heavy @ 420lbs - maybe that could be what you're seeing.

I had the same issue the last time I took the boat out, which was before the average heat index became 110°, so it's been a few months now.  I emptied out my water separator and changed the filter in the engine, and this seemed to clear it up.

Mine sits low too but nothing to worry about. Not that low like said before that motor is a little heavy.I change my filter every 5 or6 months just to be sure haven't had any of those problems.Only problem I am having is finding a prop I can afford.

I'm waiting to hear back on a price for your prop... Sorry, saving money takes a while sometimes  .  I got mine for a steal through a local boat plant I work for sometimes, so hopefully I can get you a deal.  I'll let you know when I know something.

Hmmmm, ok, I did empty out the external fuel filter, but not the in line engine fuel filter maybe I should try that.

The boat does take on a heck of a lot of water though, just bobbing around.

I have another point that is of some concern, The oil tank seems to have the same amount of oil in it as when I first used the boat & I think I must have used about 10 gallons of fuel, how do you check if the correct amount of oil is being delivered, the only smoke I see is on initial start up for a few seconds.

I will go now to see if I can change my Facebook settings.
Please tell me if you get to see my profile & videos etc

When I had the old motor 175hp Johnson the oil injection pump was bad So I replaced the VRO with a fuel pump and just mixed the oil with the gas.On that motor it was easy to tell if it was working motor would not run when you gave it gas.
Thanks for looking for that prop it will be great to be able to run it like it should.
