1st Dreamliner visits Charleston

Our 787-8 Dreamliner ZA001 test plane stopped by for a visit today at work.  It was very cool to see this Starship Enterprise Behemoth up close and finished.   :shock:  


This is one of the highly modified 747's we use to transport the pieces of the plane that we build to the plant in Everett.  It's been a fixture at our plant, but it will soon be gone when we begin Final Assembly here in Charleston.

Impressive aircraft for sure but as I'm a civil guy not aeronautical I'm rather impressed with the assembly building. From what I've seen and read, it's pretty slick in it's own right. :thumright:

Way cool.  Being an old aerospace guy myself (Martin-Marietta, now Lockheed-Martin for 14 years), I have a good deal of knowledge as to what it takes to build those bad boys...

I tell you what was REALLY cool.  Was at my folks in S. Orlando one afternoon back in the 80's, out by the pool, heard what sounded like a jet REALLY laboring.  Looked up, and directly overhead at about 2000ft was the 747 transport plane with one of the space shuttles on it's back, bringing her back from Edwards.  Read today the dry weight of the shuttle is 171,000 lbs...that 747 was working!!!

Beautiful aircraft - I like all of it except the RR engines...  Especially on the 4th of July, I'd prefer GEs or Pratts...

Appears GEs are an option.

Those engines are freaking huge!  Talk about some serious bypass going on there!  The scalloped edges are interesting too.  Must help diffuse the exhaust preventing turbulence and drag.

The new building is quite impressive.  I recently made a move to that building, and a Jumbo Jet looks small parked inside...  :shock:

Is this what you're referring to?  I haven't been lucky enough to see it in flight, and probably never will since the space program is officially over now  :(   Consider yourself lucky to live in Florida


Bob and CJ,
Yes the GENX engines are optional, and the majority of the planes we'll be selling will be outfitted with GE's powerplant as opposed to Rolls'.  Couldn't really say if one's better than the other, but I'm betting supply is the answer.  Since this plane is almost 3 years late now (some unaffectionately refer to it as the "7 late 7"), it's probably who can ship the engine quicker.  Wingtime-  the engine isn't as big as it looks.  Most of what you see is the turbine housing; the engine itself is about 1/3 the size.  Still, I bet they about blow the asphalt off the runway.

If you only knew the percentage of parts on the Dreamliner that are outsourced and MFG'd overseas... The majority of the parts I work with come from Israel and Canada, sections of the fuselage are built in Italy, the in-house automated assembly is made in France, and I believe the wings are built in Japan.  We could never claim this plane is "Made in America", but we could say it's assembled here...  :roll:



I wanted to share one more picture with you guys- this photo was taken because the Dreamliner and the McClaren both boast a body built almost entirely of Carbon Fiber.  8)

Kinda keeping with the thread, here's Columbia hitchin' a ride back to the Cape in 2001.


This pic was front page on the local mullet wrapper and after circling the Capital she headed east down US 27 right by my office at that time.

Not as impressive as watching an actual launch on the beach but still pretty cool. 8)
