Rodents
« on: June 17, 2011, 09:21:55 PM »
Anyone else dealing with these vermin? We have two that we know of. A very large dark rat with a long tail and a medium-sized mouse. They are inhabiting our patio/storage area. They don't have names yet, but they aren't very scared.

I have two mouse traps and a jumbo version advertised for rats. Baited both with Jif peanut butter (smooth) per direction. Bait has been out two days...no victims.

Any experience/suggestions? Thanks guys.

I usually just put out DCON.  It gets them sooner or later.

Put out a George Dickel in a shot glass on top of the bar and one out by the pool. Maybe some Sesame crips and cheeze. Have a conversation with them and tell them Fitz is coming up with a flat shovel if they don't move their collective butts to a more desireable neighborhood.

Scott,
I am Bawanna, the great white hunter.... I have woods next to my shop, and in the winter deal with this constantly.

Rat Trap (big) the older ones are better without the plastic yellow bait tray, but if that is all you can get ok.  Put bacon on the trigger pad, and tie it down with some thread... then... set the arm, down in there, and this is the tricky part, you MUST work that trigger arm while holding the snapping head buster until you have it where a good breeze will set it off.  The newer plastic ones tend to be a little more difficult to set off, and if your visitor is cunning, they can get away without getting their little gord smacked.  I guarantee success, if the rat trap is set to "micro-sensitivity" level, it will easily bust a mouse also.  You will jump a few times while setting it and learning the sweet spot, but once complete, the little fellers don't stand a chance.

It's been so long since I used a trap that I had forgotten about bacon.  It worked better than peanut butter for me.  Marc's method always worked for me.  I would tune those traps like tuning the trigger on a target pistol.

Fitz, I'll buy the Dickel if you will come get this damn bird out of my chimney.  He is above the wood stove insert and making me crazy with his flapping.  He sounds weaker today so maybe he is about done.  I guess I could build a fire...

I think this little feller is why I have not seen any vermin around.  Better than a smelly cat.

Every year at this time we used to get the Chimney Swifts nesting in the flue. It was amazing to watch them fly in there head first at 40 mph and put on the brakes by the time they got to the fireplace. We kind of liked it after a while when momma would return with a grasshopper and the chicks would start chirping when she arrived. Get some Dickel in a shot glass; take a sip, stick your head in the fireplace and open the flue and the nest should fall right on your face!

Many years ago when we had our first fireplace a starling got in the house through the chimney.  The wife was the first one to get home.  I guess it zoomed by her head as soon as she came in the door.  She called me at work in a mild panic because she did not see what it was.  All she knew was that something attacked her.  She was standing in the kitchen throwing shoes into the living room trying to make it fly so that she could see what it was.  She finally got brave enough to throw a towel over it and throw it out the door.

Guys thanks for the great tips! Gotta do something to get 'em, they are driving our little dog crazy.

JJ, it would be great to shoot the little chits...I like to target practice, and shooting something on the run with a long tail would be awesome! But I'm afraid I'd shoot the grill or something. And every time there's gunfire here in the hood, the sheriffs and EMTs always come...and I'm afraid they'd find momma's secret garden

Fitz, your idea is so exciting it just gives me the shakes! I know it would work, because since they live at my house, they are probably genetically predispositioned to like Dorge Jickle!

They train rats for lab experiments to do tasks with pleasure as the reward...ring bells and such...I'll bet my patio around 12 o'clock tonight would sound like a pinball parlor.

And that Dorge Jickle also has a knack for inspiring amorous feelings...and singing all of the verses to songs like "Bye Bye Miss American Pie"....

So, gotta go with Marc Bawanna....the hair-trigger sweet spot apple-smoked slab bacon with a hint of maple!

We always have breakfast on Sunday morning, will set some aside for our furry friends.

Thanks guys! Will report back!

Bingo! Success!

Sort of

You guys may remember I baited a little trap with P butter...then was gonna use bacon...but my wife used all the bacon for something else...well, I forgot about the trap.

The night after JD and Mike left we started smelling something...so I told her I would look into it when I got home from work. Well she is an impatient sort...she decided to look for the source when I was at work. (Mon)

About 11am the phone rings, its her, but she is hysterical and crying and squealing, all shook up. She had found the dead one all right, but a livey came haulin' ass right beside her arm when she was up under a cabinet.

When I got home, took the shop vac, sucked up the nest and a large amount of poop. It looked like a mouse brothel. Or a safe-house for illegal aliens with tails.

Anyway, cleaned it all up, gonna bait it with D-Con. Hope this is the end of the story. Thanks.

Years ago....  When i was in high school. I was awaken by screaming women.  My mother and sister saw a mouse in the kitchen and were freaking out.  I trapped him under a tupperwear container and slid it off the shelf onto the top. Over to the sink i went.  Down the drain he went and i turned on the garbage disposable.  THEY WERE MAD AT ME FOR BEING MEAN TO THE MOUSE!  Go figure... i went back to bed.
