Aquasport/Proline connection?
« on: June 14, 2011, 11:52:30 AM »
As a newbie, I have seen Proline boats mentioned when talking about classic Aquasports.  Is/was there a connection between the two?

ok.  That's a pretty straightforward answer.   :jocolor:
I was just wondering if the "P" word boat was a splash or knockoff....or was there a connection.  At some distance, they look similar.
Now I know. :salut:

Oh, and I am still looking for a 19-1 or 19-6 <~~~shameless plug.

Found a 22-2 locally, but the seller can't come up with the title....(wonder where he borrowed it at?)

Seriously, there was no business relationship that I've ever heard of. They certainly competed for the same markets with similarly designed boats in the early 70`s. The build quality, design and brand recognition belonged to AS. It seems the 24' flatback prolines are a good runner up to the 22-2 AS's for rebuilds these days.

My buddy just picked up his 2nd 24 proline flatback to redo its almost the same as my 22 flatback, Same beam and looks almost identical. Sure they did not copy the 22 flatback AS?
The construction looks alot cheaper though on the proline with what looks like scaps of roven stuck together for the hull.

Well, I guess I ought to chime in here.  PL and AS hav no affiliation whatsoever over the years.  That doesn't mean the Attwoods (founders of PL) didn't steal certain hull designs from other builders, it's been known to happen.  Google AMH VS Pathfinder, or go here... http://www.ca11.uscourts.gov/opinions/ops/200411259.pdf, and that is probably the tip of the iceberg...

That also doesn't mean that the current management of PL doesn't do it as well.  Actually, it's quite common in the business.  When I was with Stamas Yacht, George Stamas would go to the Miami and Lauderdale shows with tape measure in hand writing down competitors dimensions on his wrist...just the nature of the business...

I was told by a boat dealer, who are always honest ,that one of the founders of Angler boats was a exec at Aquasport and "borrowed'some of their designs.I 'm sure stuff like that goes on all the time.

Pete,
Have heard a bit about Angler myself...

All in all, it's nice for posterity's sake, but in the big picture, it really doesn't mean a hill of beans.  I mean, look at stepped hulls.  Been around since the early 1900s.  But everybody thinks, nowadays, it's the best thing since sliced bread...

What's old becomes new again...

Scott,
I am oh so familiar with that Pathfinder lawsuit.  If they had documented their hull changes correctly, they would have had PLs ass...

One has to keep in mind that there are only so many ways to make water behave the way a hull designer wants it to, and most of those have been tried and tested way before we were born.  Actually, the reverse is the better way to go, let the water dictate the hulls performance.  Problem is, the waters surface is ever dynamic, always moving, never moving in a predictable manner, in other words, a chaotic state.  THAT science is still in development...

Sooooooooooooooooo,
Is what you are saying:
1. Buy the "not stolen" <wink, wink> 22-2 here.
2. Drive to Ala. with a bill of sale, register in Ala.
3. Drive back to TX with the new registration.
4. Register in my name in TX (being careful of course to erase any HIN and TX registration numbers)
5. Live happily ever after!

Touchdown
