2004 Sport DC main fuse to helm buss
« on: June 06, 2011, 11:16:16 PM »
I finally got some time to rewire my 2004 Osprey Sport 215 DC. I dropped the helm for better access and now have more room to work. You have to be a contortionist or have 6 foot arms to get at stuff on this boat. I've been tracing wires from the stern to the helm, and the power feed to the panel has this black connector. What is this? I'm guessing it's a step-down connector as it has a .25 quick disconnect at the panel connection. Also since the batteries are in the starboard console, it seems redundant to run the panel power feed and ground from the power posts at the stern back to the helm when I could just run direct to the batteries. Is this correct? Thanks for a great site.

Black connector. What is this?

Stern power and ground feeds back to helm.

Helm pulled forward.

Maybe I misread your post. Have you pulled it apart?

Looks like an inline fuse to me.
Wire gauge appears different on each end so maybe it does "step down" the wire size, but why?

That is probably the main connector for the helm power, just like in the older models they had that blue QD, but apparently caused some problems, looks like they just changed the style of connector, wire size difference?? This is just speculation on my part, I'm sure Bob will clarify.

Yes, it is the power to helm cable. I did pull it apart expecting a fuse, but it looked like a metal stud; male on one end and female on the other. Wire gauge steps down 6 to 10? The 10 has a .25 quick disconnect that goes to the panel. There is a 30A fuse block in the power feed to helm line as well, you can see in the 2nd pic at the stern.

Marc is exactly correct, that is simply a plug that connects the feed from aft to the panel at the helm.  That blue plug was such a POS, glad someone finally got rid of it...

Love to see the yellow grounds!  As people deal with newer and newer boats in the future, you'll see more of that.

Great, thanks. That answers that.
As to the 2nd part of my question, besides the 2 main battery cables running aft to the 2 power posts, can I just eliminate the secondary power and ground feeds at the stern and just run them direct to the batteries at the helm/starboard console?
