Have a question wires on 215 explorer. Seabob ?
« on: June 06, 2011, 11:11:11 PM »
Hi guys
I have a 98. 215 explorer
I found a wire harness in the storage area in the cabin on the port
side. It  looks factory it's rolled up and fastened.  The ends have brand new crimps on them. Anyone know if it's origional and what it's used for. Thanks

Colors of the wires would help.  A good bet is it's for windshield wipers, but if you tell me the colors, I'll probably know...obviously one will be black!

I am going to guess factory wire hardness for a Marine stereo. My stereo is located on the port side (in front of the passenger seat to the left) and the wire hardness runs under the carpet on the roof of the cuddy.

Jason,
Very well could be.  But I would imagine it is speaker wires only...

Hey guys
sorry took awhile to get back. The wires I found are black blue yellow and a red and black and also looks like speaker wire and also a plastic plug and a small metal plastic covered female plug. There are connectors on the ends crimped on and brand new on the other. The wires are all wrapped and wire tied very neat looks factory.

So let's look at this from a marine color coding point of view, which we did use back then...

Black, back then, of course is a ground.  The blue indicates a light, perhaps an optional cabin light.  Yellow is normally for blowers, but I would guess in this case it is for some other optional accessory.  The other plugs? :?

If you know how to to do a continuity check, access the backside of your helm and start ringing out the wires until you get continuity (should be same colors), then see what switches they are attached to.

Wait.  Red, Black, and Yellow.  Stereo power, stereo ground, and stereo memory...red, black, yellow.

Well, I'll jump in here for a stab at it.  being you have the wire colors and connectors, pull your switch panel and see the corresponding colors and which switch they are going to (probably the accessory switch).  The yellow sounds like the stereo memory wire (constant hot) that one will be in your black box in the transom compartment with the batts, blue is usually lighting, the others I can't swear to, but in general it sounds like as others have stated, it's a stereo harness.
