Scott, where do you find your non-ethanol gas, and how much are you paying for it? Is it 89 octane?

I wonder if I should switch.  (well, obviously it would be better to switch, but it's an equation  of cost and convenience.)

Excellent post. Black and white, and twelve years ago. Barely relevant then, but at the forefront now. Great job by the OMC team.

Thanks.

Damn, I just drove by that Max's on Friday!  We're building a new store up there (actually on US41 at Central Sarasota Pkwy... the old Albertsons building)  Of course I didn't have the boat with me, but maybe next time I can work out a work/play trip.  Good ramps around there? I hear Siesta Key is nice, wanna check it out.

I checked that link, and the closest to me is in Cape Coral, and was $4.56/gal, according to their info.    maybe I need to open a gas station!

Tarpon Point Marina and KC's river stop (Cape Coral Yacht Club) both have non ethanol but of course you have to pay dearly for it.

Hey guys, here's a listing for non-ethanol fuel stations in FL:

http://www.pure-gas.org/index.jsp?stateprov=FL

We have a Citgo here in Winter Haven that is offering mid-grade ethanol-free fuel ( 90 octane ) for around $ 3.85 or so a gallon. That's not a misprint...$ 3.85 a gallon.

Local marina wants like $4.75 a gallon. I am thrilled that I can now purchase good fuel for my boat, lawn mower, weed eater, etc at almost the same price as ethanol crap.

Talked to the owner of the Citgo and he said he's selling all he can get; usually runs out of gas by Sunday and has to wait till Tuesday to refill his underground storage tank....mentioned that it was a "barely break even" proposition.... but he said that people were coming from all over the county to gas up boats, motorcycles, vintage cars, etc. Said his other business ( ice, beer, soda, snacks ) was up a good 30% as well, especially on weekends.

I tried to talk the owner of another Citgo station next to my subdivision ( Haines City ) into carrying ethanol-free gas and he said it would be a "waste of time and resources". Well he's struggling to stay open and the other Citgo dealer 10 miles away is prospering.

Basic supply and demand. Some people never get it.

The Shell station close to me is the biggest in FL I think - like 40 pumps.  I went in and talked to the owner and he said it cost 10k just to clean and certify a tank for ethanol for shell gas.  He sells recreational diesel but apparently wasn't interested in doing the recreational gas - don't know why, he'd get double the sale - fill the boat and the truck at the same time.  I told him that but haven't seen any action in about a year.

On a somewhat related note,my buddy came to visit me last weekend,he is a accountant for American Ethanol, you could imagin our conversations, well he said that they have a new lawsuit filed against them on a weekly basis because of that stuff, but he still totes the company line about how good it is for everyone blah blah blah,he also found it hard to believe we could still get non eth gas here and that e 15 is pretty much a done deal.

An authorized OMC and Yamaha dealer here in sunny FL, has a sign in their shop that says ethanol related problems are not covered under warranty. They told me that Yamaha people went all over FL sampling gas, and the average amount of ethanol found was 21 %. Far cry from the advertised 10%.

Thats pretty scary but not surprising... I doubt the gas station owners actually know how much ethanol is in the gas they are selling or they even care. I have always wondered what the batch control methods are at the refineries. I'm not sure what the cost structure is  to manufacture ethanol verses gasoline; I'm going to assume it is cheaper which would lead to the in excess of 10% issue. I often talk to our local Hess gas station owner about fuels including trying to talk him into non E10 for boats and power equipment. He often appears clueless about the subject and doesn't seem interested in learning.

I was always under the assumption that the refinery (oil) was tax credited (somewhat around $.50/gal) based on the total amount of ethanol purchased. If that is true, the incentive to add "just a little extra" to the blend is well understood.
