Newbie to the AS world
« on: May 13, 2011, 08:32:33 AM »
I just bought my first old(er) school AS. She is a 1986 model 271. She is 28'10" with a 9'6" beam. She is going to be a huge project, but the end result should something my family and I will be proud of.  She needs a transom and has few issues with the floor, but last year we did an extreme makover in a 1974 23' Mako center cuddy and had a blast.  Then when the wife, kids, and 3 dogs piled in I realized I did not have any room for what the boat was actually designed for FISHING.  With this one i think i'm going to leave the wife and kids at home and maybe troll the dogs.

I plan on enclosing the transom, adding a bracket and will power her with twin 225's (I'm looking for a pair of late 90's, carbed 200's or 225's), add to the tower that currently exists for a foldable 2nd station, and about 1000 man hours and she should ready to go.

I'm looking for anyone who has information on this model (not alot out there I've been able to find.)  Interestingly enough, I found my actual boat posted in a thread on here started in 2009. It does not look like anything was done to her based on the old Pics in the '09 thread.  New Pics will be coming shortly

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated,
Bob

Welcome aboard Mo  :!:  :!:
Yeah, there has only been a couple of 271 seen here over the years and one of them was seen twice.  Nice big wide Ospreys and the biminis are something you can hang a hammock on

I would sure appreciate any leads of where I might find a trailer suitable for the 271.  She is a monster, and I am trying to find a 12K tandem that will hold her.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Bob

A 271 on a trailer could pose some challenges.  First, check your state laws regarding over-width and over-weight limits.  Some states require a commercial license when towing over 10,000 or 15,000 lbs.  And your 271 with gas, water, and trailer would likely go over 15,000.  You may be limited to daylight only as well.  Po-Po is on the lookout for oversize boats on the highways these days.    :x

You will need a 3-axle trailer with 7500 lb axles and brakes on each axle.  What are you planning to tow it with?  Ain't going to be a Scion!!   :geek:

Here's an idea for a two vehicle - nice mid-size SUV:

Good luck!!

Thank you for the heads up.  Curious about your numbers, dryweight is 4700#, twin yammi with a bracket 1300#, rigging 500#, 200 gal of fuel 1400, 30 gal fresh water 200#, the wife ???#, I'm not getting anywhere close to the 15k.  Am I missing something?

I strongly doubt that boat weighs only 4700 lbs.  I think Aquasport guess a tad light on their empty weights.  They list my boat as 1800 lbs or something...  NO way is it that light.  of course someday I will get it on a scale.

My 97 245 Osprey, no gear, 250 Yamaha, less than a 1/4 tank of fuel, and the heavy galvanized trailer hit the local scale at 7K...

OH OK I thought he had one of the 270XF Express models.  Those would tip the scales at an easy 15K.   A 271 open fisherman... I would guess 9K or so loaded up depending on how the boat is equipped and if the foam is wet or not.

My trailer is going to weigh just over 1500#.  The title and VIN both indicate 1986, but the "Factory" exterior paint scheme is the AS white and blue with 271 on the side.  Everything I have read about the 271 says they were only made in 87' and 88'.  She is a center console with a raised front deck, with fish boxes aft of the center console outside of the stringers.  The LOA and beam are in line with a 271 but there is no listing for a 1986 271, only a 270 in a couple different models.

I pulled the boat home on a tri axle steel trailer from ft lauderdale with my 1/2 ton ford @60 mph without any issue.  Looking for opinions in lieu of dragging it to Ft. Pierce to to put it on the truck scale.

Thanks again,
Bob

Bob,
One thing I've learned about Aquas (and probably other makes too) is that they don't always "look" like what is shown in the catalog.

The HIN reveals only that Aquasport registered (proper terminology?) the hull in 1986. The Aquasport "chrome"decal is circa 86. The paint scheme well, for what it's worth my 84 CCP has the 83 color and decals so.......

Yeah, I ran in to a similiar issue on a 23' front cuddy center console Mako.  Wouldn't it be great if someone could blend old school craftmanship with modern day technology and accountability.  I am beginning to believe I have a 1986 model 270, what does that change from a weight aspect?

Thanks,
Bob

See if any local moving and storage companies are around you, that is what I used up here, they have their own certified scale for weighing the moving trucks.
