Time for a new trailer
« on: April 26, 2011, 08:19:53 AM »
Good morning AS brothers,

The time has come to retire my vintage Shoreline roller and powerwich trailer and begin the process to replace it with a new drive on. I am looking for feedback and recommendations. My goal is to keep this under $3000.00. I am also willing to look at "new" used if available. I have a majic tilt dealer nearby but I want to explore options and dont mind doing some driving in Florida-So. Georgia if the deal is right. Since the  77' Shoreline never had brakes, I will be looking for the best brakes available that can live some reasonable life in salt water. I am a maintenance freak and dont mind getting dirty to keep things working. The boat is a 73' 22-2 with twins, external bait boxes and a 12 degree bottom. Let the games begin! I do appreciate all comments...

Im a fan of the Slide-On trailers by Owen and Sons. Although I dont currently own one, it will be my next trailer.  I especially like the set up of their bunks.  They have large side bunks , as well as center bunks which really help cradle your boat and make it simple to load and unload. They are really a custom fit.  My buddy had one built 4 yrs ago for his 23' Dorado. (Perfect fit and no problems to speak of.)

The owner and crew are Good-'ol-Florida boys, really easy going.  When I called for a quote, the owner knew all about my 19-6 and all other Aquasport models including the degree of deadrise etc..  He said "there is no need to bring the boat, we've built tons of trailer for these boats."  We then spoke for approx 45mins about price, options, extras, wheel size, tire size, single vs dual axle, brakes, no brakes etc etc etc.  He would have went on longer, but I was at work and had to stop him short.  From what I can tell they seem super knowledgeable and are very willing to fine tune a trailer for a fair price.

Just my thoughts anyhow, good luck.  http://www.slideon.com/

Totally agree with Skoot.  Around here, if you're gonna get a trailer, Owens & Sons is the real deal... :thumleft:  :thumleft:

OK Guy's

1) What is a Rolls Axle?
2) I got on their website, is #1 pine bunks the old heart pine? Majic tilt claims cypress bunks.
3) Their trailers come standard with drum brakes; what are the best stainless disc brakes for the money?

The stud grade of pine lumber is a general-purpose categorization for lumber that is used in vertical load-bearing capacities. Stud grade lumber is rated from Grades 1 to 5. Each grade of stud lumber typically falls under one of the other grades of lumber as well. Stud grade pine lumber is defined by restrictions on the qualities in the wood that affect its strength and structural qualities. Stud grade lumber heavily restricts the amount of warp as well as the size and frequency of splits, holes and knots in pine boards used as studs

Here is a rolls axle that I put under my 170 - stainless hubs - no brakes needed for this little boat.  Axles guaranteed for life - end to end.

Hey Fitz,

I apologize for not following up with you. Just moved and trying to keep up with the kids.  Once settled, let's get together for the summer for a run to Matanzas.

Saw this on Craigslist tonight and thought of you.  No connection to the ad, but since they are in Palm Coast thought you might want to check it out.  Says Bill of Sale, but make sure they have title....

I looked at a couple of used "nice" ones; all junk so I'm back on the new kick. I have a Majic Tilt dealer about 30 miles from here so I will start there. Get some prices. Basically I will be shopping axles and brakes.

If you can find a used Rolls trailer you can order stainless brakes, hubs and everything else and be good to go.  The axles are already guaranteed for life.
If you find one, act stupid and see if they even know what they have, then go from there.

Just for giggles I did get a quote from Float on for their model 723 that would fit the 22-2. They are quite proud of their trailers I must say. You can get two different grade trailers in this model. Basically the full monty all stainless "driveline" and fasteners or the lesser more galvanized version. $4500. or $4100. respectively. I may be misguided on what trailers are going for these days since its been 11 years since I bought a new trailer. I know Float on is a quality product and believe in getting what you pay for. So I will continue to get some quotes to get a realistic average before purchasing. I have a feeling the Owens Brothers will be equally as proud of their quality. I just need to get a grip on reality and convince "Mama ceta" how much value and pride a new trailer will bring to the household while telling her that she may have to wait a little longer for her kitchen remodel. This should be fun.
