custom built title or boat with no title... help
« on: April 20, 2011, 04:49:37 PM »
Well I have been looking for a way to title a boat that has no vin or any way to identify it. I believe its a 72 based on the part of the cap I have and the stringer setup. The boat is just the outer skin with a new transom. My question is has anyone had success in getting a custom built title without the old title to state original ownership. I have contacted the Florida FWC offices and Dmv and gotten no where. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

You can go to the Tax Collectors office and apply for a home built title or tell them it is older than Nov. 1, 1972 and it does not need a title.

I've done it with boats and trailers...home made.  I get a bill of sale as well...

Roy,

JJ and SB give good advice for the fair state of Florida. Hopefully you reside there. Ga, SC have similar regs in place.

Here in NC...different tune, trailers especially....can you state your grandmother's maiden name?

10 years ago my brother gave me a little 5x8 ATV trailer.  He never registered it because it stayed at the hunting club.  I never registered it because I never used it (much).  A few weeks ago I took it down with a "new" bill of sale from my brother and a weight slip from the county dump scales.  $70 smackers but no hassle.

I know many around here that have homebuilt registered old boats with no title, no registration, and no bill of sale.  A few got hassled a little.  I think it depends on the clerk and their time of the month.

Agreed 100%.  Especially since its just the the shell and transom. (who can argue its not homemade)
You should have no problem, but you might have to bring the boat with you so they can see it.

Good luck

OH I have so been there done that!      I bought a inflatable boat a LONG time ago and tried to register it.  The PO had laminated the title and carried it in the boat in a peanut butter jar.  I had a bill of sale and the PO had signed the title.  The clerk who clearly had aunt Flo in town told me the title was not actually signed since the ink was on the lamination and not on the actual paper!      So I went to a different DMV office and a nice clerk there called the State and settled the problem for me.

well thanks for all the imput.. its similar to what I have been told. But Im very worried about putting 5 or 6 grand into a hull and then getting into a bind. I was hoping to get somthing prior to but they would help unitil its certified by the fwc... which they have been useless to say the least.

Thanks again and I will keep you all updated on the progress.

I think you will be just fine under the homemade or older than 1972 based on the link JJ posted.  FWC has nothing to do with titles and registration.   People build home built boats, airplanes, cars etc all the time and they have no trouble getting a title.  Also I think there is a salvage title you can get too.

called dmv this afternoon, and fwc has to perform inspection once vessel is completed, you must have that form when applying for custom built title and must be accompanied by all reciepts and documentation. Not a single person will comit to anything till its done tho. so i guess im gonna just build it and hope for the best. If all else fails ill buy another 222 and use that title.

Thanks again for the help guys.

Currently doing the same thing with my neighbor, he has tried to no avail, and has just pushed fwd with the build, if everything is documented with receipts and such, it won't be a problem.

make sure you have receipts for every nut, bolt, and washer.  no matter how small.  more information is better than less.  if they do not give it to you the first time because there is not enough info, it will get more difficult thereafter.
