2nd battery wiring
« on: April 14, 2011, 07:56:24 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I have reviewed most of the previous posts on this subject and I don't want to grind the subject to death, BUT, I want to add a 2nd battery in my '72 19-6 Open.

I already have a Perko selector switch installed as well as a battery box just waiting.  The battery in there now is a 2 year old Midstate Sportsman Dual Purpose.  1000 CA, 205 RC and 115AH.  Should I get another dual purpose?  I have been reading that the recommended is (1) starting and (1) deep cell.

The positive terminal on the existing battery has both red leads from the switch on it.  The negative terminal goes to the outboard.

I know that the new battery will get one of the positive leads from the switch and I am guessing that I will install a short jumper between the negative terminals on the existing battery and the new one.  Is this correct?

Any help appreciated!

If that current battery serves your purpose, that is it starts your motor and runs your electronics efficiently throughout your trip, you're satisfied with its costs and longevity then yes, buy another. Why not?

Yes.
Here's a series of schematics showing various wiring scenarios. The 5th from the top fits your application.

Thanks for you input Capt. Bob.

The previous owner only ran that one battery with no issues so I will look to supplement it with the same.

Thanks again!
