Retrofit jump seats on the transom
« on: April 04, 2011, 12:06:22 AM »
Well, if your boat is like mine, you've found some creative methods to seat passengers, aft of the helm.  I've had people sit on my live well, sit on the transom, and neither are very comfy.  I know that jump seats were an option on some models, but I'm thinking those seats are pretty low.

Here's what I'm thinking, and tell me if I'm crazy.  If I add 2 or 3 rod holders like HERE in red, in my transom (the transom is wide-- about 9"),

I could then add a cushioned backrest, the type that slides down into a rod holder, like on this leaning post:

And that might give a more comfortable place to sit, when I have more than a couple people with me. OR, I've seen some boats with rod holders on the outside of their transom, which might be an even better idea.

Or hell, I could just Go Redneck and bolt a couple of these on my transom!

Have you seen anyone retrofit jump seats, and do it right??  I need some ideas!    :D

Well Glock...lot to think about here.

We see boats all the time with rear seating, especially in the last few years. Usually some type of hidden, flip down/flip up idea, for ease of use and convenience. And the seating area is inboard, so Aunt Polly doesn't go flying out the back with a chicken leg in one hand and malted beverage in the other.

With the way your transom is set up, with the scuba tank racks, this won't work. If you removed the two port side racks, you could possibly add a internal flip down seat, but not sure given that big hatch.

If you were to set it up on the transom per the first example, the rear of your calves could be beat-up by the tanks or racks. To eliminate this, you could slice a piece of white hose, and snap the hose over the racks.

If were to follow this method, then you definitely would want to use one of those rod holder slide-in style of long back rests, with the rod holders on the OUTSIDE of the transom. These stand-off type holders are really functional for rods too, as they are out of the way and won't catch nets, etc.

You could do a mock-up in cardboard, duct tape and 1X2's just to see what you think. Heck, since you're going to MCL this week, you can probably find everything you need for a hundred bucks or so.

If you were to go this route, you might want to add some internal grab rails for safety.

The idea is a good one...good luck, keep us posted!

Mike
I have thought this out a few times also, but that round livewell back there kind of screws up the flat transom for mounting anything and making it look half way decent.  So, for simplicity, I carry a couple of these, they stow nicely folded up in the FWD fish boxes, easy to deploy, and very comfortable for the passengers.  I buy the heavier duty frame ones, they seem to last a lot longer, academy sports, Bass Pro etc... this is just a sample pic.

Mike,
I think we've seen them on here before, the original jump seats we offered from the factory.  PITA to install, I betcha i did less than 10 sets of them in my years.  The backrests mounted in sail track mounted to the tackle station door and to the inside of the transom door.  Your tank holders would definitely hinder that install...not to mention I doubt there are any "old" sets of seats laying around, even at Marine Connection.  G.G. Schmitt made the frames, and I think they made them as an order came in, I was always waiting on them...

I have a couple of the transom jump seats that I bought from a forum member. My passengers like them besides that their back hits on the top edge of the transom. Therefore I am just going to add some bolsters on the transom to remedy it. The pins that hold the seats into the bracket are a real pain to put in and remove, because the ball on the end of the pins are fixed. I'm probably going to replace the pins with a clevis type pins with clips.

Marsh-- I like your pics the best, if I could rig something like that, I'd be happy. Is that on your boat?

Bob- I've seen pics of that factory option, but the seats didn't seem very conducive to adults... Pretty small, right?

Jcaesar, sounds interesting, could you post any pics of your setup?

No that's not my boat, that's on a 186 Key West.  I thought about adding that to my boat, but the transom on a 19-6 is very thin compared to yours.

I can price some of these for you if you're interested.

They are actually fairly wide, as wide as the helm chairs that came on my boat anyway.  They even have built in cup holders.  I should also mention that they block opening the fish box. They also block access to the battery door. Not usually that big of a deal. Because we usually only use them for crusing or getting to our fishing spot, and then I throw them in the cuddy. Or if someone wants to sit on one while bottom fishing, then we can remove one and have access to the fish box through the opposite side.

Check this out!    Saw it on a 21' Cobia yesterday and snapped a picture. If I could find something like this, that would be sweet.  Option 2 would be having a welding shop make one, but I'm guessing a custom job would be pricey.  [EDITED to add:  I got a quote from Action Welding in Cape Coral... $645 to make one of these puppies, including the side rails.    ]

Getting better.  Different welding company in Ft. Myers will do the job for $525... Is that reasonable, y'think?  Still seems kinda pricey.

Looks good. Pretty much what we all had in mind.

Money-wise....Would think the boys up here would come in around  $450-485 with grab rails shown...could ship down for $18.00....Fed-ex ground third day.

No need to pay those prices....the craftsmen here are excellent, reasonable, and hungry. And they do superior work.

Mike,
That is the exact same setup as on the 202 Cobia I re-wired!  Nice deal!
