My garage DIY anchor project...
« on: April 02, 2011, 01:26:40 PM »
Well, after losing 2 anchors in 2 weekends, I decided I'm done buying anchors!  My new policy:  I'll use anchors that I find while diving, or I'll make them.

So, here's my take on a Mighty-Mite grapple anchor knock-off.  Cost me about $25 in materials to make it.

If you like it, there's detailed instructions on how to make one here: http://www.thehulltruth.com/boating-for ... tures.html

put a ring on the top where the hooks are and put your shackle ,chain and rode there then take a zip tie and run it to your top ring, zip tie chain to your ring when you anchor if you get stuck just pull line tight then snub line to cleat pull forward till zip breaks and pull the rest up.I haven't lost a anchor in a long time.

I have revised mine now, well, when I still had the 22-2.  I switched from chain to 1/4" SS cable.  The flukes don't get hung on the cable.

I use a grapnel anchor like the first one never had the problem with chain.

My fluke anchor is set up this way, but my new grapnel anchor has aluminum tines, so it will bend straight if it gets hung up.

My anchor losses were somewhat unusual:
1st, the shackle either broke or the pin came out. And away we floated!

2nd, we were diving, and the current picked up so strong that I couldn't safely retrieve the anchor from 100' down, so I tied it off to a buoy float, with the intent to return the next day and retrieve it. But the current sucked my buoy below the surface, and it was GONE.

Scott, that's the buoy that got pulled under the water!!!  Man was I pissed.
I had 150' of rope, 20' of chain, and we were in 102' of water. (not the recommended amount of scope, I know, but it was a galvanized grapple anchor, and the first diver secured it when he went down).  I tied off that buoy, let it go, and under it went!   :x

No, I just had the orange buoy.  Normally I use that buoy and 100' of floating line, and toss it off the stern as a grab-line for  divers, just in case the current has picked up.  This time I thought it would keep my anchor rode at the surface, but I was very wrong.

Never used one with the metal ring as anchor retrieval -- how does that work exactly?
