Trip to St. Helena Sound
« on: March 20, 2011, 11:42:33 AM »
Took a trip out to St. Helena Sound yesterday to scope out some possible camp sites.  There's an island out there called Morgan Island, but everyone refers to it as "Monkey Island".  It's an isolated barrier island that conducts a Federal Project to breed and sell Rhesus Monkeys to laboratories for testing all over the U.S.

There's allegedly thousands of Monkeys that live freely on this island.

I've yet to see a monkey on this island myself, well except for this one that crawled in the boat-

But I did see a cool 23' MayCraft outfitted to be a TugBoat that I wanted to share with you guys:

This sign was made for a reason.  Somebody did this at least once...

I took some other pictures while I was out.  It's really a beautiful area.  Didn't get around to doing any fishing, just sightseeing all day.

Anyway, just figured I'd share with you guys.  I hope some of the rest of you enjoyed the beautiful boating weather yesterday  :salut:

Beautiful scenery - thanks for sharing.
What are the tide swings up there? Looks like those beached boats could be there a while.

I have a lot more pictures on my Facebook album if you're interested:

I've been beached out there myself.  The current runs fast and strong, and the swing is about 8'.  You're not beached for long- the locals use mostly skiffs because they basically plan on being beached.  It's hard to find a real channel out there.

The Sound is really the "A.C.E. Basin" which is a wildlife refuge where three rivers (Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto Rivers) converge into barrier islands.  It's an almost completely undeveloped area, which apparently is good for endangered birds, endangered sea turtles, and of course, monkeys  :)

We had good news here recently- after 150 years, the first sighting of a pair of whooping cranes returned to S.C., and they made their home in the ACE Basin.
