Bob,  The structure scan and high def transducers  only have to be within one foot of another for the downscan overly feature to work properly. All that is is a display view that overlays the downscan ontop of the standard sonar.  If the ducers are more than a foot apart the two images my not align properly.  To be honest not many people including me use the overlay feature.

Another advantage to the Hummer - only one transducer for all scans and temp.   :thumleft:

Thanks SB. Gonna hit the Worst today around 4 and check 'em out.

Got to thinking about the return trip. Is there a place around you to stay...is there a "Mermaid Hotel"?

Pretty close to it, directly across from Weeki Wachee Springs.  Heading out right now to do the daily errands, snap a pic of it.  Been there forever as that was the only place to stay for all theose MILLIONS of visitors to the park back in the day...

There's also a Holiday Inn Express about 5 minutes from the house on 50...

Furuno 627 is about $875 (similar to the Humminbird 798).  The Simrad NSS7 is a nice unit - no side scan, but with touch screen and lots of expansion capabilities - looks to be $1400 without radar (similar in price to the Humminbird 998 - the Hummer has an 8" screen and side scan, but no radar/wireless capability).  At $1400, the Raymarine c90 (big screen for the money) or the new e7 starts to look pretty good - the e7 is new model with lots of options and expansion capabilities.  The Garmin 740s is worth a look as well at $1100 - nice unit with 7" touchscreen display and upgradeable for radar - the Garmin does not do side scan.

So many choices!     Too bad it's too late for Santa!   :santa:

In an hour or so a 33 Palmetto is showing up for electronics, big screen Raymarine units.  I believe the owner already has either C120s or E120s, not sure...also not sure if he has them sold yet.  Will report back with pics, maybe a vid.

Scotty, have fun at Worst.  Put them all in simulator (Menu, System Setup, Simulator, On), then start the navigation process through the menus.  Pages to me is the important function, and how easy it is to split pages.  Then how does it look with say, 1/2 chart and half FF, then how easy is it to create a waypoint on the chart based on what you see bottom wise on the FF, like a ledge, hole, reef, whatever...

Yeah, you can do all that!!

Get a BIG radar and it will cook that chicken for you!     A good GPS would have KFC locations installed so you can navigate directly.  Of course, I prefer Bojangles...   :thumleft:

CJ, unfortunately for the chicken lovers of the world, today's radar (at least on recreational boats) is digital...no more radar range fun!!

Just like non-leathal weapons - taking the fun out of everything these days...     I've seen the over-the-horizon radar on Navy ships knock birds right out of the air.  Got some power on those things!

My advice to Scott was a separate NAV unit and FF. Which allows him to upgrade one or the other at some point in the future. Or if one takes a dump he just needs to replace that unit. I've never really been hung up having the latest and greatest just because. I've have and old Furuno FCV-667 CRT screen that gives beautiful bottom definition and has more features than I'll ever use and it's pushing 20 years old, it probably weighs 10#! and a Garmin 545 for NAV. Old :*: that works great. Scotty is like me, beach fishing within 5 miles of shore for kings, cobia, tarpon and some close wrecks.

Exactly :thumright:

Based on that, went to West Marine today. After reviewing their options, will post some pictures of a separate chart plotter and nav system.

Thanks :salut:

One of the main reasons I settled on the Lowrance HDS is simply the amount of features you get for the $$$  Also the add one network accessories are much plentiful and reasonably priced.  If you want to add XM/Sirius radio or weather it's $99 or even free with rebates...  not so with Garmin they want big$$$  color radar?  The new digital stuff is very affordable now.  The Garmin 7" is nice but for not much more $$$$ you can get the Sidescan.  Now Scott may never need or use that though.  It all depends on what he wants and how he will use it.

Scott do what I did.  Go to Worst and sit there and play with all the units.  Try to find your away around each brand without help from the sales people...  You know not only the basic function screens but the settings and such.   I was there for almost two hours...
