John,
Was reading last night that basically Lowrance copied the side-scan of the Humminbirds, calling it structure scan...and got sued and lost.  Don't know what the penalties were, but both companies seem to be doing fine with it.  I know Bruce loves his structure scan on his HDS-7, one thing about the Lowrance units is that the broadband ducer and the structure scan ducer have to be within a foot of each other for the SS to work properly.

Scotty,
Back to the site offering the compass.  They have been around quite a while, I have just never ordered from them.  If it were me?  I'd place the order.  You know I by a TON of boat parts and supplies off the internet, probably about 98% of what I buy.  1.5% I buy from my little girl Patty at Sterling Marine in Hernando Beach, the other .5% from Worst.

I have yet to be screwed on an order, although I have received the wrong item at times.  Upon contacting the company, I usually receive the correct item even before I've had a chance to send the old one back...on their dime, they provide you with a shipping label and an RGM.

So my opinion?  Place your order... :thumleft:

Thanks for the great ideas on the units/combo units guys! I'm going to Worst at the beach tomorrow after work to check 'em all out, run the sims, press some buttons.

Hey Lew, that boat show deal is looking better and better. Which unit was that? I can't believe what they get for this stuff...its nuckin futts.

Bob, they certainly have about the best price out there...Jamestown wants 350 bucks for the same compass.

Bought the ticket today one way back from DAB to ILM....we're good :thumright:

A decrease in the compass budget = an increase in the electronics budget.

When you headed south Scotty?  Please leave the cold fronts and cold weather in NC.

Nando, just came in from the shop...brrrr!  The frickin wind!  Not really that cold, but the wind...

Mark's 250 got picked up this morn to go over to Weeki Wachee Marine (just past the Upper Deck).  Butch, the service manager, picked her up, excellent dude, we bullchitted for quite a while (imagine that!).  So this aft spent building harnesses and running them (and securing the forward harness into the Bimini cuddy!) on the Scarab. A good healthy physical workout, so I wasn't cold...but now?  Indoors for the night!  The Scarab is going to have 2 fans, 2 lights, and 2 12V outlets in the Bimini, the fans and lights run off a switch panel, so a bit more wire than one might think.  Gonna hide a little ground bus behind a b/head so I only have to run one ground forward.

Bob,  The structure scan and high def transducers  only have to be within one foot of another for the downscan overly feature to work properly. All that is is a display view that overlays the downscan ontop of the standard sonar.  If the ducers are more than a foot apart the two images my not align properly.  To be honest not many people including me use the overlay feature.

This is true Bruce.  But I want the owner to be able, should he want to, to be able to use every feature the unit has to offer.  Knowing me, and my luck lately, I'd get the one owner who WANTS to use it!!! :(  :(

It's kinda like the old "stereo memory" wire, the yellow wire on all stereos, regardless of make.  99% of the boats I get have the red and yellow terminated together to switched hot.  All that means, of course, is that when the batt switch is turned off, any pre-sets and the clock settings are lost.

Now, these days, you get tons of people who say who even uses a stereo anymore other than for playing tunes off their ipod?  Well, that very well may be true, but since that is the way a stereo is supposed to be wired, to give the owner that feature, that's the way I wire them...

My luck?  I get the one owner that uses his stereo as a clock, and actually listens to talk radio on the water...

Nando, Craig is bringing a tandem trailer up here Thurs. Jan 31st. We'll load the flatback, and pull both boats to my house.

Daybreak, Friday morning the first....we'll have an AS convoy heading your way :bounce:

Scott, the unit we looked at was the Simrad NSS7. I stopped at Worst yesterday and looked at them again and guess what the price was......... 1299.00! But no transducer. Of course the rebate is gone now. Since they are part of the same group  as Lowrance side scan is available on it as well.

I have another idea to throw at you with your setup. Have a dedicated FF on one side and a combo chartplotter on the other. I agree with Fernando, I like Furuno.
Here is a deal going on THT for the new FCV627 FF unit which I really like. Then on the other side get a Garmin chartplotter as big as you can afford.

THANKS for the input guys. Have been really been thinking hard on installing two separate units. But the prices....

Trying not to get too carried away....I can see the chartplotter route line now. Same little circle we always run. Dock to the inlet, fave spot on the beach...back to the dock  And the FF....showing a school of pinfish in six feet....hey look honey...fish...see the little fish things here?...."Yea, whatever"

Need to find an electronics' dealer who wants to please his wife. Happy wife, happy life.   Do a little horse trade

Scott,
Should you go with different makes per each function, it's good to know they can be interfaced on the NMEA 0183 level to exchange data with each other.  In doing some research it seems the Furuno will need an additional interface cable that has the NMEA ins and outs to mate up with a Garmin or whatever...

Thanks SB. Gonna hit the Worst today around 4 and check 'em out.

Got to thinking about the return trip. Is there a place around you to stay...is there a "Mermaid Hotel"?
