Hello guys  i just finished a 4 yr project 16' correct craft  new stringers floors tranny repower to chev  etc.  found a 72 aquasport 22 w/200 johnson and roller trailer. and want to start this next. any input would be appreciated.  i am assuming it will need at least floor and maybe foam and stringers.  there is a soft spot at the helm. (my luck it is all rotted)  some quick qs  why do some of hammerhead boats seem to get rid of original transom design and use or fab new full height transoms with a full width bracket for the outboard? and what are new spray rails and what are they used for    thanks Peter.

Can you post some pics of the correct craft please?  I am an old school skier, grew up on CCs and MCs... love to see it.

Usually a soft spot in the floor means bigger problems and warrants replacement of the floor and quite possibly some of the stringer system, but if it's "at the helm", I'm guessing you're referring to the tank hatch under the console, and not the rest of the deck.  If so, you could get away with just redoing the tank hatch.

BUT- if you plan on redoing the floor, you might as well redo the stringers while you're at it- there's no better (or possible) time to do so than when the floor has been removed.

I'm sure others will chime in about the enclosing of the stern, but my guess is that's done to provide more structure to mount an adjustable motor bracket for use in shallow water.  I understand that a bracket puts more strain in the form of leverage on a transom.  (we don't see a lot of that here in Carolinas, must be a Florida thing).

Spray Rails are useful on these boats because they were not built with a hard chine (not hard enough to effectively deflect spray).  Lot's of people add them for this reason.  I plan on adding them myself

There's plenty of knowledgeable guys here that have rebuilt, and are currently rebuilding that same boat, so I'm sure you'll get lots more help!  :thumright:

Hi thanks guys the correct craft is a 68 correct craft skylark i did floor and stringers and pulled a blown up v6 and put in a merc 5.7 you can see it on youtube under punch it 68correct craft . it gets scary squirrely over 52 on the gps i think its got a rudder/prop cavitation issue. anyway i dont have pics on the aqua sport except a lot of snow . i will prob not build it as a florida flat water boat so maybe the extended outboard mount wont be needed . i hope to keep it somewhat original with some new perks and prob plan on a repower when the hull /trailer is done .the floors and stringers dont frighten me as much as the price of big outboards yikes . being an inboard fan ......i wonder

A lot of the boats have the full transom to allow a porta-bracket to be used.  Also with a full transom it is much more difficult to take a wave over the stern.  That and they look cool.  I think that is most of it.  They don't really help a boat perform better.

I think spray rails were added to flat back AS 222.  They were added because those boats didn't have a spray rail to keep the spray down in a quartering sea.  Your boat shouldn't need them.

Aquasports have a fairly wet ride, flatback or not.  This is due to the "hardness" of the chine.  Here is a pic-



"hardness" refers to the amount of downward angle the chine has.  the more of an angle, the better the chine will be at deflecting spray.  Adding a spray-rail along the outer edge of these chines, forward of the console, will help any Aqua owner to stay drier.
