Mike,

I will leave what brand of Trim Tabs up to others to talk about since I'm a little biased  :D

I would recommend installing either Bennett M120 10" x 12" or 12" x 12" Trim Tabs by any manufacturer.

I had a set of M120s on my '83 20 foot Aquasport walk-around and they provided great control in all conditions and most importantly let me plane at lower speeds.  Being able to hold the bow down in a chop really improved the ride!

If you have a swim platform on the transom the M120s have shorter actuators that make it easier to install them there.  Lenco makes what they call "edge mounts" to lower the height required on the transom under a platform, so you will want to look at that option if you are leaning towards them.

I will be delighted to answer any questions you might have.

Tom,
Just curious, why not the 18 x 9 plane? I ran those on my 222CCP and they seemed fine. I've now transferred them to my 21 WAC. They look really BIG back there. I'm assuming they will work just as well  .

Thoughts.

Capt. Bob,

An 18" x 9" would also be a good choice, the M120 and 12" x 12" Trim Tabs will generate about the same amount of lift, so they are pretty much equal.

The reason I recommend the M120 is that it is 10" against the transom and 12" fore to aft.  Since it uses much less room on the transom it is much less likely that the transducers will have to be moved to make room for it.  Additionally the small fins that extend downward that create extra lift also limit the turbulence thrown out to the side, so it can be mounted a bit closer to the transducer without disturbing it.

As I mentioned above the M120 kit comes standard with a shorter actuator (ram) that makes it a lot easier to mount under a platform (we can even shorten the actuator 1" more if it is a really tight fit).  The M120 kit also comes with "pre-connected" hydraulic lines that are easier to install than the pipe nipples and elbow in the standard 18" x 9" kit. The tubing is simply pushed trough a hole in the transom when installing the actuators.

I mentioned the 12" x 12" Trim Tabs as a nod to the other manufactures as they take a bit less room than the 18" x 9"s and will also be a good size for the boat.

I think that since you already had the 18" x 9" Trim Tabs you did the best thing in reusing them and they will be great on your 21.  But if you were installing a new set I would have steered you to the M120s.

The 18 x 9 s do throw out a good spray.
So much has changed at Bennett dealing with the electronics of the tabs, I haven't paid any attention to the rams or the planes.

You make me feel old. :(

Me too!

I've been in the marine business since the mid '70s, when I was on vacation in Fort Myers last month I wandered into a shop that had a sign saying "marine antiques".  There was stuff that I used to sell or service in there!
