17 rebuild

I recently salvaged a 17 aquasport custom which was full submerged. I began cutting out the decks recently and found that all of the foam is completely saturated with water, no big deal because I was planning on re-doing the whole boat. Also I discovered that parts of the stringers are destroyed, my plan is to dig out all of the foam from the whole boat along with the stringers. After repairing the stringers I want to pour foam back into the stringer shells and recap them. I am looking for any ideas and/or tips from others who have rebuilt their 17. Please send any info and/or photos for advice.

I just got a 1974 17footer that spent Halloween at the bottom of LI sound. I heard from someone else about saturated foam. Will the foam ever dry out over the winter or do I have to tear it out also

killaman926 You say you salvaged the boat.
Did you get a clear title in your name "Before" you started the work on it?

Yeah I got the title from the owner, I work for a salvage company. The owner wanted nothing to do with the boat anymore so he signed the title over to me instead of paying a salvage fee.

Is that a 17? Must be one of the older models, right?? No underdeck gas tank and different bow storage setup from my 1985. Now would be a good time to try and install an underdeck gas tank.

Yeah that's my plan, I am gonna install a 55 gal. fuel tank and maybe a smaller reserve. I was wondering about the forward storage setup because I haven't seen another one like mine yet.

Not too sure of how long the boat has been under but it looks like quite some time...pre hurricane Wilma.

I know you have a lot of work ahead of you but I'm jealous. I'd love to have a place to cut my deck out during the off season. Kinda cold and wet up here.
Enjoy and please keep those photos coming.
