Is there any reason *not* to put the batteries in the front storage hatch under the casting deck? It seems that this would really help the weight balance if a porta-bracket were installed. Does such a long wire cause any problems?

Just upsize the wire and make really solid connections and it shouldn't be a problem. I personally would go up two wire sizes from whatever they recommend.
