High-grade deck hatches
« on: December 25, 2010, 07:43:38 PM »
Per Seabob's recommendation, Jim Black hatches:

Only reason this site appears is they have good pics. Haven't checked price comparison. I do not see a website for "Jim Black Hatches."

It's all in the "inner workings"...

Scott, when one has been dealing with these vendors for too many years to speak of, one knows how to find things...

I saw that too. But they never really called them "Jim Black." Wasn't sure if it were a true Jim Black, or a knock-off.

Thanks bro.

Looking at it closely, you're right. Sound engineering, big  O' ring, tightly sealed, great latches. And available in many sizes, many colors.

All I want for Christmas....

The hatches I used in the deck of my CCP were the Jim Black from Great Lakes Skipper - good product and the price was right.  I used a Innovative to replace the hatch in front of the coffin, but I think I like the seal better on the Jim Black - both are very similar tho...

CJ,
Innovative actually bought out Jim Black a couple of years ago.  Couple of guys in Kissimmee.  Jim Black was/is an old crotchity guy in Tampa, been in the OEM supply business forever, finally said enough is enough, sold the company, and on to greener pastures...

SB:  does this mean the hatches I got a couple months ago were at least 2 years old, or does it mean Innovative is still selling under the Jim Black name, or ???

CJ,
Can't tell you for sure.  I know when the PL plant shut down, they had a TON of hatches, all different sizes, in the stockroom...and I also know they owed a lot of money to their vendors.  Whether they were able to trade some of the overstock in for credit, I don't know...

On the underside of your hatch lids, there is a code.  Contact Innovative with that code, they can tell you when they were made... :thumleft:

Good to know, tx SB.

Presume Innovative is still producing those colors, wonder if they have any new ones. Would be cool to find a foam green to go with the correct 70's deck color.

CB, thanks for moving this here. Called today Great Lakes Skipper and Innovative (located in SB's hometown of Kissimmee) for product info.

Great Lakes has more colors available, and their prices are lower. The lady there explained that they bought bankruptcy inventory, overstocks, and closeouts.

They had some cool circular hatches too.

Does anyone know the height of the Jim Black deck hatches (once installed)?  Just wondering if they're toe stubbers or fairly low profile?

I'm finally getting around to cutting into my deck and install a bilge pump.  I found a perfect size 9x12" deck hatch in Carolina Beige. It appears to be a really close match to the original deck color.  Gran, did you ever order any of these hatches?  If so, what are your thoughts?

Hiya!

They are VERY nice. I ordered several of them. We made a goof up when we did the deck, and because of the way we configured the deck, these hatches wouldn't work. I've sold a couple of them, but think I may have one left in the size you need.

They are all light almond in color, made in Italy believe it or not. Low profile, 1/2 inch in height.

Let me know, I'll check and send it down if you like :thumright:

Skoot,
1/2" at the most in the center of the hatch, the edge of the flange slopes down, not a toe-stubber at all.  Of course, if you had a molded hatch recess, it would be a moot point...

I cant argue that one my friend. Thanks a lot :thumright:   I think the 9x12" size would be perfect for my 19-6. Would you happen to need round screw on access plate in off white for anything?  I purchased one from bekson awhile back, but then realized it would be almost impossible to have acquitted access to the bilge.  Let me know!

Thanks again
Scott

I have a JB hatch on my 2-22 and it's super solid and has a nice seal. can barely notice it when walking around the deck with it closed. Only thing I've noticed is that the pin that holds the latches can start to creep out a little if you're opening/closing them alot. (not a deal breaker).
