My 1971 Aquasport does have 'outer' stringers right up against the chines, thats probably what whoever he talked to was talking about, & filling with structural/4LB foam.  But mine's a 19-1, the stringer layout is different from the 222.  And like he said they are a problem, the rod holders mounted to the sides of the boat get screwed into those stringers, then the screws shake loose, water leaks in & saturates the foam & weakens the already thin glass there.  It's a great design if you can keep the water out.
Round two, no screws into the stringers.
While you're tearing into this thing, take a look at where the forward bulkhead crosses the boat.  The vertical wall of my longitudinal stringers ended at the back wall of the bulkhead then started again at the front wall of the bulkhead.  The glass on the top of the bulkhead wasn't strong enough to keep the boat from flexing, ended up cracking the stringers just forward of the bulkhead some time before I bought the boat.  After cutting the tops off the stringers I connected the vertical walls of my stringers to run through the bulkhead.  Hopefully they fixed that little oversight by 1987.

I don't have the forward bulkhead or the side stringers but thanks for the heads up.
The stringers were damaged in a few places.
Almost all damage was due to the way they foamed the stringers.
The used a grinder or skillsaw and made overlaping square cuts to pour the foam.
If they would have used a holesaw and cut circles it most likley would have never happened.

Tabbed in and glassed the transom yesterday.
Still need one more tab of WR around edges to give a bit more structure and tie in the stringers.

I also picked up my new fuel tank, Allow Metal Works did a great job.

Coosa board should be here on Wed and the Porta Bracket ships out early Feb.
I can't wait to start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

I pulled the forms off the foam and now need to shape it before glassing.
Once the stringers are tied in should I add knees to it?

Killer job buddy. Looks great so far, jump to my post and check my progress out as well! To answer your question about knees, I would say without a doubt add it. It is the perfect time to do so and it can do nothing but add strength. Also, quick question for you. Did you use more than one strip of the 1708 to tab the transom in? The pics show one, just didn't know if you added more, your work is too clean to tell!  :wink: Best of luck

I went to your thread, wow you did a lot of work!
I feel a bit better now as far as the condition mine was in when I started.

As far as the 1708 there are 2 tabs and one of 12 oz. tape, but one more large tab of either 18 oz.
woven roving or 1708 will be the finish step.
Which would u use?

Did find time to shape the foam.

Boats looking great. As far as the material I would use to do the final tabbing, i'd hit it with a couple more layers of tabs of 1708, I hit mine up with a combination of mat, 1708 and 2408 because I knew it would be hidden in the end result. If you are never going to see this area of your boat id hit it with a nice fat tab of 2408, maybe 5-6" longer than that 1708 under it. There is going to be an incredible amount of stress/torque on the corners of the transom! In a nutshell 1708 or 2408 for the final tabbing, your choice.

Quick word of advice. I don't know how much weight will be in the back of the boat or the options you plan on putting on it but I can tell you what I did with the fuel tank on mine, and from the test float it worked out pretty well. I marked out the dead center of the boat. Found dead center of the tank, then I took the tank and moved it 6-7" forward of center. When I did this, it compensated for my  motor,  porta bracket,  power pole, and  trolling tabs and made it float perfect, Lucky guess on my part. Depending on your set up, you can adjust the tank to what you think will work best, sort of a guessing game unfortunately. When we totally rebuild these things we change the entire geometry of the boat and what it was originally designed to do. I bet if you told the engineer of my 19-6 that a 225 vmax would be hanging off it, he probably would have told you to stop smoking the wacky tabacky! Anyhow, Great job so far buddy, I like checking in on your post, you do nice clean work!

What'd you decide on the knees for the back? What horsepower and stroke motor? and what sort of bracket?

The new tank is only 50 gallon down from the 80 gallon stock tank.
I will have to do some guessing.

I do plan on doing the knees for the transom, just had to take a grinding break. lol

I will have a Porta bracket with a 2 stroke 225 Yamaha.

I have plenty of room to move the tank and even the console forward if I need to.
Did you do a float test with everything just placed in the boat and then glass when it worked out?

Yes that's exactly what I did. Moved the tank forward, whatever I did to the left I dis the exact same to the right. Placed the unfiberglassed floor in the boat along with the tower to double check. Now I will glass everything down!

Would like to know what people think about the fuel tank coffin box.
Should I cut it to the size of the fuel tank and keep all the weight as far forward as possible?
Or should I leave it alone and have the fuel tank forward with a bulkhead in the coffin.
I know I could use the extra couple of feet for storage, but the extra weight aft is my worry.




This boat won't have a tower like most I see in FL. so there is not much to offset the transom and bracket.

I'm going to try a float test late Feb. if the 2 feet of snow melts!

Cut the floor panels and knees out of coosa board and getting ready to lay them up with glass.

Looks good!  One thought, you might want to make your transom knees the same width as your stringers, it will spread the load more equally.  

And I would not worry about not having a tower to offset the weight of the bracket - I would prefer to have less weight in the boat overall.  Just move your fuel tank slightly more forward and perhaps move the center console forward a few inches.  Overall I would bet you'll be good for balance.

Thanks for the advice, I'll add a couple more panels to make them at leat 3/4 the stringer width.

Do I need to paint the bilge and under deck area or can I leave it bare epoxy?
If yes what paint would be best?
