290 aquasport
« on: December 08, 2010, 08:05:09 PM »
Im bay testing a 1988 290xf. I really like they lay out, it looks like a clean boat and I think im going to buy it in the next week. Can some of you 290 owners give me some insight into the boat. It has the small block volvo gas engines.

Thanks

Just my .02 cents on the power, the volvo can be very expensive on parts.  Make sure you get a very good survey or qulaified opinion on current condition.

The key is going to be the maintenance performed on those Volvos.  Have they been O/H'd?  Any records?  Any idea on hours?  Gas motors, with dillegent maintenance, will usually get you 1500-2000 hours before MOH or replacement...and that's pushing it.  You don't want to buy the boat, then, 3 months later, have to repower her...

I got a steal on the boat and brought her home. She preformed nicely on the ride home. Got to tell ya, they made a nice boat here. A little dissappointed in her speed at cruise i was doing about 18 MPH at 3000 rpms. I guess i have to play around with her a bit to see what i can do. She is blocked up and winterized for now. If anyone has any thoughts, comments or ideas. I would like to hear them.

Congradulations,
I  have the same one, great boat a little tough on fuel and the cruise speed is hard to figure. Bring all your numbers to a good prop shop and they will point you in the right dirrection. In a big choppy head sea you will have to keep the bow down and speed down a tad.
I just repowered mine last winter with 290 HP mercs and my speed is just a tad faster than yours and i need new wheels. As for the volvos dont worry they are a  chevrolet block with volvo ingnitions and pumps if cared for they will last you just about forever. If your boat has a tower that will slow you down. As for the boat itself i love the room below decks and the room you have on deck, Watch your stringers they ended them  just before the bulhead and and they will fail if they are waterlogged. more to follow.

Interesting.  Rather than run the stringers full length and then notch the b/head to fit around the stringers...

Yeah, that doesn't make sense.  Something's amiss here.

I'm sure you have stringers that run full length under there somewhere.  Since you step down into your cabin I think you would have taller stringers in the aft that probably stop around the bulkhead.  I think my 230 has something like that going on too but I do see shorter stringers up front.
All these boats were production boats and we've seen some weird things under the decks.

No tower on this puppy, she has an aluminum frame for the top and curtins. The top is made of fabric, but the frame appears like the same guage they would use for a hard top. (unless you looked closely, you would think it was a hard top). It also seems like the owner powder coated the aluminum (perhaps that was just the way the did it in the 80's) it the same gray as the gellcoat in the decking. All of the strainers are heavy bronze perko, same with all the raw water intakes. It just seams like they used some really solid material putting her together. I never associated aquasport with this kind of boat, why did they abandoned making this class of boat?

Ill post pictures as soon as i can...
Thanks all, happy holidays....
