fishbox drain project
« on: December 02, 2010, 06:08:37 PM »
Started my fishbox drain project today, picked up an 8" pie plate cut the opening and drilled the hole on the bottom for the pump.Putting in the pie plate alone is a good idea as it gives good access to the bilge pump.Using the existing pump and screen as is there is still going to be about a 1/2" of water left in the box,way better than before, but not good enough.I was thinking about installing a drain like this one   http://www.marineeast.com/a_sch/sch_det ... &pid=02_07
and using some fittings and hose to hook to the pump.Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks!

Would like some pics, I especially am interested in the pie plate access to the bilge pump, since I can barley touch it even with my long arms through the rear access.  As far as the fish box, I use the original set up, but drilled a 1" or so hole in the bottom and just put a through hull fitting in there and use a rubber garboard drain plug, out when it's just sitting on the trailer with the hull drain plug out, so the rain drains out.  In when I'm using the fishbox, which actually isn't very often, with the one piece lid, removing it while everyone is in the stern fishing is a real Beech.  But if I do, I let the original pump get most of the stuff out, remove any chunks, then just rinse out with some bleach water into the bilge and let it run out.  The drain in the box is primarily to avoid the overfill during heavy rains.

Pete i second the need for pics,my curiosity i running wild on this one.

Marc that's not a bad idea with the drain plug, when my pump went out i removed it and left the hole open for awhile,it was nice not having water in there after a rain, but i replaced the pump now same problem again.

will get some pics up soon,my plan is to put a drain plug in the original hole to drain out the rainwater, also going to put weather striping all the way around the opening to stop most of the rain water from coming in.

Got all my parts and started to work some more on the fishbox, pretty happy with the results, did a test before I hard mounted everything,it left about a 1/4" inch of water in the box versus the 2 " before the mod here are some pics...

still need to clean up the wiring and put the weatherstriping around the edge.

pic under the box

will be much easier to work in the bilge area, can also get to the livewell plumbing from there as well :salut:

also thinking about adding a support bracket by glassing a block to the hull.

Pete, are these shots looking through the pie plate you put in?? The bilge pump and through hull for the washdown/livewell are that easy to access?? I'm there....

A pie plate WILL get installed in Marc-Time this winter... that makes getting in the stern bilge area too easy.
