Leaning post installation
« on: November 17, 2010, 01:11:07 PM »
When drilling holes in my deck to install a leaning post, I hit something metal with the drill bit.  Boat is a 1996 Osprey 200.  I was drilling on the starboard side, beyond the gas tank and about 15 inches behind the console.  Its not steering or control cables or the tank.  It is something very solid.  Any idea what that could be?

We used to glass in aluminum plates in the deck sandwich, basically as strengthening for a leaning post mount.  We didn't drill and tap, they were there simply to give the #14 screws something more substantial to bite into...

Scott,
There was someone here last year that had one on his Explorer...can't remember who.  Cap'n Bob, JJ, Cap'n John might recollect...

Betcha Schmitt could fab one for you...or any local aluminum weld shop...

BTW, EXCELLENT de-railment!  At least it's not this kind of de-railment...

Marine Surplus used to have a bunch of leaning posts in all stages of assembly from just tack welds holding them together to completely finished minus upholstery.  Some had fold up foot rests.  I did not look in that area the other day when I was there.

I bought mine from there and upholstered it myself with vinyl, foam, and starboard backing from them.

This is the only picture I can find at the moment.  June 2006 - Bunces Pass.

Give me a measurement for width etc... since I am going to be down in FT. Pierce for the T-Giving holiday, I have very strong feeling a trip to the Marine Connection Surplus will be in order.. I'll take a look for you..

SB...you remember that company long time ago outta Pa. that used to make half-posts, tackle stations, etc.?

The made them from teak, had to have been early to late eighties.

Killin' me I can't remember the co. name....a long name, like three syllables...

Birdsall and Pompanette made half-posts back then too.

Reason mention this is that they all had really nice designs...A lot of guys fit them on Mako, etc. dual consoles at the helm.
