New member with a 250 Osprey
« on: October 29, 2010, 09:39:18 AM »
Hi everyone, I am excited to say I recently acquired what is listed as a 1987 25' Aquasport 250 Osprey.  I am thinking my Yamaha is a 225 or 250hp but all it says on it is YAMAHA V6.

http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww53/jaycal3/?action=view&current=IMG00340-20101023-1245.jpg

I am coming from a 21' Classic Mako so this is a bit of a size difference and I cant wait to get her in the water.  I do have a few questions for all of you Aquasport experts.  I was hoping to find the original specs and layout of the boat here and have yet to be able to pinpoint my particular model.  If anyone has or knows where I can find it I would appreciate it.  I would love to know what size gas tank(s) I have.  There is one in the front and one in the middle or rear.  I would also love to know how the fresh water wash down works (I think thats what it is called)... its in the left side of the center console.

I look forward to any and all responses and have learned that forums are a wealth of knowledge as I also take part in 2 others - Jeeps (what a bunch of fanatics) and a BMW forum.
Thanks in advance!
Jay

Welcome aboard!

Here is a link to a 1987 brochure page for a 22' Osprey:  http://www.classicaquasport.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=574

What kinda Jeep do you have?  I have four of them in my stable and I'm helping a buddy restore a 1967 M-715 Army Jeep truck.  You can see some pics here:

Thanks for the reply!  I have seen a ton of literature on the 22'... nothing on the 25'.  Makes me wonder why?!  I will look through this though as it may be similar.

Regarding the Jeep, I have a 93 YJ and had a 90 YJ prior to this.  I love them!  If you arent part of Jeep Forum here is a good one:

You might want to give this member a PM. He's still current (we just swapped coffin boxes on our CCPs). He's owned the model you have plus every Osprey model manufactured at the Hialeah plant, what I call the Gen 1 hulls.

Hi Jay, welcome aboard! Where are you from?
Hey guys, thanks for the welcome!  I am from Shelton Ct and do most of my fishing out of Norwalk, Ct - Long Island Sound... I will be moving the boat north just a bit to the Bridgeport/Stratford/Milford area this coming season and cant wait to get this one in the water!  I will post the HID# later today and hopefully that will help me get some info.

Thanks again!

Capt Bob, which member were you referring to?  The one who started the thread?

That would be correct, based on the opening remarks that he has owned many different lengths of Aquas, all being the Osprey model.
While the thread title is "86 - 250 Osprey sits low in the water" I would bet that your 87 is the same model, different year.

Keith Knecht is the member's name.

Good luck.

EDIT:  It appears that the HIN # is listing your Osprey as a 1986 model year, built/certified in February of 86. Very interesting 8)

Did you not look at the link I posted?  It explains how to read the HIN.

RickK... yes I did look at the link you posted and read the explanation of how the HIN works.  Not being an experienced boat owner a number of things went through my head:
- I wasnt sure if the number was a manufactured date but not the model year like with some cars... my car was built in '03 but is an '04 model year car.
- A review of much of the literature on Aquasport from the '86-'87 period shows a 250 Osprey produced for the model year '87, however I do not see a 250 Osprey for '86.
- My uncle who is an avid boater and also Captains a charter, listed it and registered it as an '87 not an '86 and I usually tend to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Thanks for the link as it was useful, and when applied correctly it seems pretty clear.  I still dont know the size of my tanks but I have pm'd Keith Knecht so maybe that will clear it up.
