Another note on acid and stainless steel.  If you google "stabilizing stainless steel" it is a rust proofing process for stainless where they soak it in a hot hydrochloric acid bath and it makes the stainless even more rust resistant.

He actually suggested Toilet Bowl cleaner too, but after reading the ingredients, maybe I can just dilute it down enough to where it's not so destructive.

I diluted it down a bit(about 20% water 80% cleaner) and then used a spray bottle to apply.
