US Open King Mackeral Tournament, Southport, NC
« on: October 14, 2010, 11:55:08 PM »
The tourney was delayed until this weekend due to the heavy rains two weeks ago. I have been invited to mate on a 33 Contender.

I will be the "net man",  responsible for catching Pogys in the ocean. I like the competition of that as much as anything. That part is a micro-portion of the contest....be the first to catch bait, among six-hundred boats...a good thing...you're gone, gone fishing.

Forecast this weekend is not what we desire for next weekend. Long range forecast calls for perfect conditions then. Will be gone until Sunday. Will post results upon return Saturday night/Sunday. Thanks.

What a strange weekend weather-wise. The first front rolled through Fri. before lunch. Wind goes from W-NW at 10, backing to to W at 20, then holds W at 20 nonstop 'till around 3pm. Then goes to RIPPING  SW-W to due W  at 25 to 30. Seven pm, wind dies to nothing, then around 9 pm goes to light W at 3. Weird.

10 pm, still no wind. We're feeling pretty good for today.....did they miss the forecast?  At 5 am just as predicted by the NWS, here comes the second front. No wind goes quickly to due N at 22 steady. Gets cold too. Needless to say, the fish are befuddled, fisherman more befuddled. Where to fish?  Everyone is fishing the lee, right up on the beach. Around 9 am  N. wind picks up harder still. We caught two in the morning....then it shut down completely. Everyone agrees the fish are still here (we saw 'em skying a time or two) but the bite was off,  guess due to the oddball double frontal passage.

Clear, cool, calm and beautiful now. I reckon that's why they call it fishing, and not catching. Wish could go tomorrow, meet Mizrig Big, and get that feel-good feeling.

Winning 43.90# was caught today (last day) 44 miles NE of Southport at Topsail Inlet by a friend of our captain's.....their only strike all day, only fish of the day. They're pretty strong tho....Power Marine Outfitter's of Snead's Ferry....

NC's top Contender dealer.....they run a 36 Open with trip Yammie 300 HPDI's....guess they can afford to gas her up for the next tourney or two....the boys picked up 78 thousand dollars this afternoon.... :D
