I am looking for some advice on repowering a 1972 22-2. I am looking for a 4 stroke that will push her top speed of say 40mph with a cruise in the middle to upper 20's. Will a 150hp do the job or do I need to step it up a bit? The boat has a dual control tower and a glassed in transom with hydraulic jackplate. I don't want to underpower but don't want to purchase what I don't need. Hoping you guys can help

I have a 67 FB that I will be repowering with a 150HP, just not sure if I am going with the Yamaha or new Suzuki 150. From what I've found not much advantage going bigger.

Bert,
I've got a 75 22-2 with a 200hp Yamaha 2 stroke. I am still trying to dial in the right prop size but the guy that had the boat before me had a 150 Evinrude. And the other 22-2 down the road from me has a 150 also. So I think you'll be fine. I put the 200 cause I got a great deal on the motor and couldn't pass it up.

I have a '78 22-2 (not flat back) with a 225 Oceanrunner. Mine is rated for 250 HP. It has a tower with dual controls which I am sure is a lot of wind resistance. The bottom is very rough because I am not ready to tackle 27 years of bottom paint. With 4 guys, tackle, drinks, food, 85 gal gas, ice (in other words, a full load), I get just about dead on 40MPH on the GPS with that load at 5900 RPM WOT (and it burns more GPH than a Navy destroyer at that RPM)

I would go with the Yamaha F150 it' the only 4 cylinder 4 stroke 150 out there. It's also the lightest, but still heavier than a 2 stroke V-6. You'd think they could put these 4 strokes on a diet?

Thanks for the advice guys. The other question I have is shaft length. The boat is the 12 degree deadrise model, not a Flatback. It has a hydraulic jackplate. thanks for the help. I am leaning toward the yamaha 150 four stroke or possibly the suzuki 175 four stroke. Looks like about the same weight.

if the transom is original, you'll need a 20" if it has been modified most likely it will want a 25". Original transoms are level, except for an indentation in the middle that looks like it's for a motor.

Looks like Suzuki is really close in weight with that 175 to the Yamaha F150. That's great to hear. I'm just still having flashbacks to the three boating seasons lost to a 1982 DT140 that once aflicted the transom of my Aquasport. Bizarre casting failures and other weirdness. Not to mention if you wanted parts, they came from California or points west (or far east). That DT 140 was positively the worst outboard I have ever known. Did I mention it had a ravenous appetite for expensive NGK plugs? No siree, no cheap ol Albert Champion plugs for the 'Zuke. Of course, this was 23 years ago, so if you get one, I'll be curious to know if they've gotten better. Just for the heck of it, call your local dealer and inquire as to the price and availability of something mundane, such as a powerpack. See what they say. I bet it's three bills for one and it could be on the next overnight $hipment from California.

I push my 83 222CCP with a 1999 225 hp Suzuki 2 stroke! Top end 40 mph+-. Fuel aprox 2mpg crusing at 30 mph. I can troll for hours and then jump on plane without any coughing or sputtering.
I did blow the power head after the warantee expired but the factory supplied a new one, not rebuilt! Installed for the cost of a tune up! I was very pleased.
The props do have issues with the hubs not lasting very long.
Keep in mind a 4 stroke Suzuki is now the same as a Johnson! That may help with availability of parts and service!

I second Warts Brownspoint comment. I ordered some stuff for my new 4 strk Johnson from them (filters, sparkplugs, etc) Even stuff that is not so regular, they shipped next day.
