Hello to all !

 New Aquasport forum user with a sweet 1979 222 Family Fisherman ASPC2201M79D with a 200 hp Merc. Black Max that I purchased recently. I like the lines of the boat and roomy fishing area. I have gone throught the engine , new plugs , carbs cleaned installed new needles and seats. New fuel pump diaphrams and replaced some antique fuel and oil injection lines. I also went through the lower , leak tested the seals drained and refilled with oil and installed a new water pump and cheked the prop for damages. I replaced the bilge pump and some fuses and wires , cleaned the interior and reinstalled some seats and brackets. The lights worked after a couple of bulb repalcements then I cleaned the fuel tank and replaced an in line fuel filter. I installed a new charged battery and the old girl sprang to life after few revs of the starter.
 The floor , outer hull and transom are soild with only slight cracking around the corners , the cracks do not go through the fiberglass. I have yet to test her in the water , but plan to next week.
 
I have one question there are two lower drains that penetrate the hull , it appers they will be below the water line when afloat. Is that common on these models ? If so are ping pong scuppers the solution as mentioned on other post on this site ?

 I have owned other boats and the drains were not that low.

That should be the self-bailing cockpit holes. I have three in my transom so I don't think scuppers are needed in my case.
It's great to see another '79 22-2 FF out there  :afro:

Are these drain holes located in the transom or the sides of the hull at the stern?

The drains are on the side of the hull.

Under normal circumstances, they will have water in the hoses connecting the thru hulls with the cockpit drains at the rear of the deck. They work by displacing the water on the deck (higher) into the water the boat resides in (lower). At times when you're carrying excess weight in the stern, the level of the deck will be lower than the level of the water you're fishing in and water will enter through the cockpit drain using the same rule of displacement. This also occurs when launching from a steep boat ramp.

The best method I've used to counter this negative displacement was installing expandable rubber plugs in the cockpit drains and removing them while under way. Very easy and cheap too.

Ping pong scuppers are a great solution for transom mounted scuppers/drains which use a rubber flapper valve.

Are these drains up forward of the helm or aft?
In my 19-6 the fish box drains out the side just forward of the console seat. It has a white plastic thruhull about 4 inches above the chine.

I have a 1979 Motorboat magazine with an Aquasport ad in it. This is for everybody that hasn't seen that thread. I still haven't scanned it, so these are pics with my camera, but you'll still get the idea. Wow, I wonder if your hull was one with a rebate?

My Explorer has a drain for each Ice/bait/cooler box under the helm seats that drain out each side - and they are just a little above the water line.  I keep plugs in them inside the box so water doesn't backflow in.

Worth mentioning..... wouldn't be a bad idea to change out those drain hoses, with double stainless hose clamps per end. They are 31 years old. A breech/break/split....as Seabob stated, they are quite capable of shipping water into the cockpit, but most likely, bilge. Try and avoid the wire-wrapped hoses...although they are more rigid....the wire will rust, and poke through the plastic....you're sunk.

 As previously posted, came way too close to sinking a '79 Hydrasport many years back due to similar hose failure connected to a below waterline thru-hull, unprotected by a seacock.

Just my 1 cents worth.... :D

You have a super ride, and sounds like you have all bases covered....

 I tried posting pics , not an easy process. I got tons of file size errors and lost patience with the process. I can email them if someone is willing to complete the posting.
 The idea to replace the hoses is a good one , now that I know the purpose I'll locate some new hose and replace them.
 This site a great resource for questions and I have also noticed a lot of rebuild support. Thanks to all for the answers to a newbies questions.

Here ya go Chris,











Looking at pic 3, (008) I see the infamous cockpit robbing splash well design  also present on the CCP models. That stated, pic 4 (013) shows the port side thru hull for the cockpit drain. Pic 5 (012) shows the thru hulls for the bilge drain (upper) and the starboard cockpit drain (lower). The cockpit drains reside in that semi trapezoidal area formed by the side (below the gunwale) and splash well on each side.

This is what it looks like below deck.


The cockpit drain is a 90 degree fitting (in right of photo, under alum. backing plate) and the hose travels down to the thru hull ( just off center of pic). Same on both sides. Access to this area is through the pie plates on each side of the splash well between the battery boxes and the transom.

Nice boat.  I have the same one but a 1975 hull without the well.  It's my winter project.

The first thing I would do is get rid of the plastic thru hulls.  Over time they deteriorate and crack and once they fail completely the hose barb portion breaks away from the hull portion and now you've got a hole in your boat below the waterline.  If you're gonna leave them, switch to brass.
