175 hp on a 196 aquasport??????

I guess I hadn’t noticed, what the 196 was rated for till today. A friend stopped by and was talking to me about the 196 I had just picked up. After some talk about the boat, he asked . Well what are you waiting for. Why isn’t a trailer under her and a motor on. I said simply. Well I’m getting a trailer from my neighbor up the street and I just started rebuilding a Johnson 115 I had in the garage. He said, again well use my trailer till you get the other one and why not just put that 175 ocean pro on her till you get the other one done. I guess I looked at him with a , what are you crazy look. Because he laugh and said their rated for a 185. I told him he was crazy. I have to go by the Coastguard station every time I go out. And I sure they will find that 175 a problem. But now being interested in the HP rating of the 196. I looked here. And sure enough it is rated for a 185.But has any one here ever tried one of today’s 175’s on a 196???????? I know hp has been talked about on here a lot. But I guess I slept through most of them because since I have retired . I’ve settled into what I call the old farmer way on driving and apply that even to my boats. I’m not in a hurry to get any where. Specially under the dirt. So Me putting a 175 on a 196 just didn’t cross my mined. But I was thinking, it would only be their for a few weeks. While I wait for this 90 plus temps to get out of here. And on  the plus side. All the cables  are the same as the 115. So ok letter ripe. Who thinks I should. And who ( like me) thinks I’d be a dam fool?????

When your hull and mine were rated, motors at the time were rated at the powerhead. So a "185" equals somewhere around a 150 on a more modern motor. You can hang one on there, but your scuppers will be under for sure. I think its too much for the transom unless you rebuild it thicker and stiffer.

But then again what the heck, it should be a fast sucker!
Just be careful over 50 they get a little squirrelly!

that’s why I was wondering if anyone had run a newer one..The transom has all ready been rebuilt. Its 2 1/8 inches thick and was raised to 25 inches for 18 inches and the rest was raised to just under the gunnels. Look on the rebuild forum under did it again. I put pic’s their. And two of the transom is their.
You know I was thinking about all those go fast boat's with those mussel bound guys with tans and their young lady friends. Sitting their in the inlet. When this old graybeard  in an old aquasport with a 175 pulls out of the marina. Then blows by them.   Bwahahahaha That would be fun.

My input is that its a weight discussion....anything around 400 lbs., you're good....and betcha since she's an older (lightweight) girl.....she's coming in around 398.

That should be the spec'd weight of your engine.

They may be muscle-bound.....but actually they're shrunk-up, from the steroids....

I think I’ll weight the motor just to see what it does weigh.  I’ll put a scale on my motor lift and lift it off the rack.  

Bwahahaha  gran  your right.  Most of them aren’t bad guys though.  At 64  I just love to jerk their chains . I’ve had a few in my class and they, to a man. Flex their mussels and say, you can’t hurt this . That’s when I laugh and show them just how wrong they are. bwahahahaha

im running a 1990 200 on my 196, even though my boat had slightly higher scuppers then the older 196's they sit about level with the waterline... i installed a set of them ping-pong ball style  scuppers and they work great... my 200 weighs roughly 450 lbs...

if your transom is soild, GO FOR IT!!!

i currently run 52 @ WOT with full fuel ant one person onboard. gonna change the prop, not happy with the performance... i also recommend a set of trim tabs with a heavier motor on the transom...

Well I finally got around to weighting my 175. Man what a surprise. It weighted in at 391lbs. I looked at the weight of a new 135 hp  20 in. shaft marc. Optimax.  402 and the Yamaha 4 stroke 115 was more and the 115 hp optimax was around 375. So weight wise. The 175 wouldn’t be to heavy. It would only be a matter of using common sense when running it in the shallows around here. Well it will now depend on how much energy I put in to rebuilding my old 115 Johnson. I honed the cylinder walls and they turned out great. They weren’t that bad to begin with. You know the only problem with rebuilding a older motor, that has been taken down 15 years ago. Is at my age. Remembering where ever thing goes.  Bwahahahaha So the 175 my go on for this fall, since energy when your older. Comes along slowly.

The 175 looks like a 25" shaft. Whats your transom height on the 19-6?

Your right it is a 25" shaft. The transum was rebuilt to 25".

In fact the 115 I'm rebuilding is a 20". But I'm putting a Jackplate on and mounting the motor to it. Some time in the future. I'm going to close it in and cap it off.
