Another 19-6 rebuild
« on: August 28, 2010, 10:54:32 AM »
Well guys i have been racking my brain lately on whether or not i should just sell my boat since the lower unit went out or just keep it and restore it. I had alot of things in my life affecting my decision to just sell the boat, work , time, business, family etc etc. but i decided that i just love the boat so much handling, lines, classic hull that i decided to keep her. I took the console, t-top and leaning post out and cut the floor out after work. (pics to follow) Im gonna need some help on what to do i have a basic idea after reading many rebuild threads. The plan is to replace the floor, build the transom up solid and add the motor to a bracket. I have already grinded down most of the odd foam and epoxy from the stringers and other than a few spots that are delaminated the stringers are pretty sound. (thank god)

My question for yall is what type of matting do i use for the stringers? Are there certain resins, epoxy to use? And im also adding bulkheads to the sides of the hull for more support what material should i use for that? Sorry for all the questions this is my first build and i have only done a minimum of glassing on minor things. So any help would be appreciated from the Aquasport family. thanks

Glad you are keeping her!
Couple of things to think about. First, are you going to keep the control channel?
Second, If you are then it makes it much tougher to lam the floor back in around it,especially if you haven't done a lot of glass. Make sure and look at thennuts build as to how to run tubes rather than have that trash catching trough.
You would need to run 1708 biax cloth or 1808 biax over the stringers for strength. Pretty much any decent epoxy will work just make sure that the cloth is suitable for epoxy because some has a coating that won't melt in epoxy but will in the styrene in a poly build.
Possible sources for supplies without breaking the bank are bateau2.com and us composites.
Make sure and read maddog's thread because he rebuilt his original stringers rather than build all new. Follow his lead and you should have no issues.

Dump the control channel! I had one in an old Angler when I was a kid and as stated above it is a crap collector and a place to breed skeeters.

Here's another thread from lil richard with a link to a really good thread off of classic mako.
This should explain a lot about differences in materials.

thanks for the info fellas i do plan to eliminate the channel and just go with a solid floor. I have been religiously looking at Lilrichard's thread and actually have pmed him a few questions. Im basically building my boat almost like his other than the fact that his was a 22-2.

So you're cutting out the original stringers?

I think he used vinylester also, not epoxy. Could be wrong!

No im not cutting out any stringers, mine seem to be ok i only have a few spots were they are seperating from the hull. I plan to just cut the tops off and pull the foam out refoam and glass them back in. What i meant by building it the way LilRichard did was the grid system with the bulkheads on the side to stiffen up the floor better.  Im trying to decide if i should use the foam method or plywood for the bulkheads?

Well guys i got quite abit of work done today on the boat unfortunately i left the camera at the house. I have been wondering in the back of my mind about the transom being rottened out and i was right. It felt and looked strong as hell but i had to find out for myself. I drilled a couple of pilot holes in different locations and sure enough water came out. So i spent most of the day exposing the core to fit the new plywood in place. pics to follow
