Who's found a use for THIS hatch?
« on: August 26, 2010, 06:12:13 PM »
Well, somehow one of the latches on this middle hatch was broken last weekend. (Black arrow). But I found the latch at the bottom of the compartment!  Somehow it was pushed through the hole.  Of course I can't reach it way down there, so I'll have to get a pole to remove it and hopefully fix it.

But it got me wondering, what do you guys store in here?  I use it for nothing. Think it would be safe to store my extra anchor in it?  I worry about it bouncing around and damaging the hull.

Then I realized that there's a hollow cavity between the 2 fwd fish coolers, but just behind this hatch. Near as I can tell, there's no way to access it.  What's in there?  (Indicated with BLUE arrows).

Mike, and any other member who has a 225 Osprey,

This was simply deemed a "storage area" by some honcho back then, therefore it should have an access hatch...never mind that you can't reach down in there to get anything!  And Mike, you are correct.  Behind the aft bulkhead in that compartment is another compartment, doing absolutely nothing.  We call this "dead space".  Cut a hole in the foredeck, install another hatch, and now you have another storage compartment...that is even deeper than the one in front of it!!!

You can always glass in sub-floors that will make them usable.  Hey, I just built them, I didn't make the "Genmar-ian" decisions...

Yeah, I keep an extra anchor in there, I think mine is a little longer, but may be the angle of the picture??  You can throw something in there for a little cushion, and it doesn't move around.  I never have a problem with extra storage areas, just questions sometimes, like the "Hatian Hatch" Huh Bob???

If one were to install a hatch for access to that dead space, would it make more structural sense to place the hatch here?  That way, your entire casting platform isn't covered with hatches, and maybe it's easier to reach things in the bottom of your compartment?

 Not that I really need the extra space, since I'm not even using that existing center compartment, but it's always good to know!

Edit to this photo to show proposed location of aluminum channel to support SCUBA tank racks.

If it were me I would put a hatch with tackle storage there for slide in Plano 3700's.

I have always wondered what the huge compartment under center console on my 98' 205 was intended for.  It's a nice big compartment with a really small hatch. What do you guys use it for?

That's not a bad idea!

.....

Somewhat related question for Bob or Bob or anyone who knows:

I edited that photo above to show where I'm thinking about adding additional aluminum channel to support more slide-in tank mounts.  The gunwales there on the casting platform seems like a logical place for me to expand my tank capacity.  The back of the boat gets crowded.  Do you think there's enough structure behind there to support screwing a channel there?  What bonding method would you recommend?  Thanks!  :salut:

Mike,
There is not much meat in the inwales in the bow area.  Keep in mind this is also the roughest riding area of the boat.  Frankly, I wouldn't do it.  I know it would be nice to move some weight fwd, but...

Good point. They pretty much need to be chocked in from the top, preventing movement. My squirrel wheels are turning....

You could probably get an adequate job (nothing fancy) with ratchet tie-downs.

Bob says Ruh-ro, which to me translates to uh-oh...guess the glass up there is not meant for much weight support....

Bob built 'em....his opinion stands alone.

SB....could he beef it up?
