Horsepower for 87 17'
«

Since the topic a few days ago was regarding the 19'6" lets now talk about the 17' (I searched and came up with nothing). I just bought an 87 17' Aquasport that currently has a 70 hp Johnson on the back. What are ya'lls estimates on what it can do for cruising and top speed? Not looking for a speed demon but I want to be halfway happy with what it will do!
Thanks for any and all help
Wes

My guess, a couple people, some fishing gear and a cooler, cruise mid to upper 20's, WOT, mid 30's. That's assuming engine running good, and propped correctly. Just a guess....but that Johnson 70 was one of the best motors ever built, and great gas mileage.

All know my thoughts. When I was a teen I had a 17 angler cc. Ran a 115 Rude on it till I sold it and bought the Aqausport. That Angler ran very high 40's at WOT and God help you if you hit a wave

All I have heard since buying this thing is how reliable and how fuel efficient this engine is and thats what I want since Ill just be running an 18 gallon tank so I can run most of the day on a tank. Thanks for the SWAG's.

Wes!! Welcome aboard dude
I have basically the same outboard, at wot it will do 29mph at 4900rpm with two people on board and half a tank(13/14gal), I usually cruise at 20/25mph
I used to have a 85hp Johnson on her, lost a few mph but prefer my Evinrude overall

My 86 17' with a 115 will cruise at 30 with four adults, full fuel tank and has plenty of throttle left.
If I had to re-power I'd probably go with a 90 and save some weight and gain a little free board at the stern.

Welcome Wes! You got yourself a great boat. I think I saw your post on 2coolfishing. You need to post some new pics of your boat on here. We all love pics. My 17 has a 90 OMC on a jackplate and I can run up to 40 mph. So I bet you would run up to about 30. My boat runs cruises perfect at about 25-26 mph. Here are some numbers that Aquasport reported when the boat was first released.

My father can vouch for those numbers with a 55 mercury in 1973.

Welcome aboard Wes :!: :!:
Even though the older 170 models were designed for a 70, your model was not and I think a 90 or a 115 would be better. Depends on how fast you want to go

I will use the boat primarily for fishing but im sure it will get a tube put behind it a time or two when we go to my aunts lakehouse on lake livingston here in TX. Ill just see how it is after i get it up and running really well.

I had yamaha 115 on my 1990 17 and it had good power and ran 37 38. I just put a new 90 hp 2 stroke and lost hundred pounds and now run 36 and my steering is much improved. my scuppers are now out of the water when one person is in the stern area.
